A guide to montage editing
Adding, not taking away
In montage editing, always adding shots in. It is called additive editing.
Disorientate
Discontinuity, disorientate, off balance, unsettling, confused and disturbed, these are the words for montage editing. The more the movie gets disorientate, the deeper the audience gets involved.
Dreams
Montage is dreams. Imagine what would happen in your dream, what may happen in a montage.
Use symbols
Look for connections like objects, colors, shapes, anything that can link two shots together, anything appear to you that can make a connection will do.
Lose control
Lose control and trust your instincts. If you feel it’s the right thing to do, just do so. Continuity is not important in montage. So as plot.
Mix close-ups and deep shots
Keep audience guessing and imagining. Try to create something that might appear in audience’s mind. A close-up shot followed by a long wide shot then followed by a combination of two shots together might be a good choice.
Use color and tone
Montage can be black and white or some other color. The color can stay throughout the entire sequence. Manipulating the color saturation sometimes helps as well.
Use music
Use of music can be very effective of making the battle even further when two images collide with each other.
Parallel montage-quickly cut from one location to another to show two events that happen at the same time. They can be related or unrelated.
Accelerated montage-make the cuts shorter and shorter that it’s too quick and too much for audience to catch up. It makes audience feel disorientated and overloaded. At the same time, it causes an overwhelming theme or feeling.
This article outlines the guide of montage editing. It is very good guide at least for me. It lists what montage express, how to make connection between two shots, how to use different shots construction to create impression, how to use color, tone, music. Also it provides two types of montages and the way to make them. It introduced montage specifically from the way of editing.
These tips are mentioned above will all be my investigate area and applied into my practical exercise of montage.
