Dancyger opens the chapter suggesting that film scholars have long argued whether editing or the absence thereof is the essence of cinema. Dancyger observes that both of these factions place importance upon the shot itself (obviously to different effect). This particular chapter is incredibly rooted in the practicalities of editing and this is something addressed early on. Dancyger’s justification for this practicality is due to the fact the creativity of editing is based upon pragmatic solutions. Beginning with an overview of the traditional process of editing including descriptions of the rough and fine cut stage, Dancyger then moves to discuss classic rules. Throughout discussion of preserving screen direction and matching action, the underpinning idea is that a cut needs to convey new information or dramatic insight. Although each of these ‘rules’ has its own function or importance they are always related to notion that a cut has significance in terms of narrative, character, drama or theme.
