  1. The author mentions the term “mise-en-scene” in the chapter “The Shot: Mise-en-Scene” to indicate something that the audience observes the most noticeably when viewing a film. The technique of a well-woven mise-en-scene is all about a thoughtfully prepared shot in which different elements play together in a perfect balance. Through mise-en-scene, the audience is entitled with the power to experience the film more immensely. The author also suggests the importance of setting, costumes and make-ups, lighting, etc. in a successful creation of mise-en-scene. On top of that, the power of the acting skills also play an important role in the creation of a good mise-un-scene.

  2. What is editing
    Editing let filmmakers to make decision like what shots will be included, how long each shot will be, in what order these shots will be, what shots will be chosen, etc. An editor will have plenty of footages in his/her hand, what to choose and how to choose is very important. It will affect the effective on editing process. Different genre of films requires different material at different shooting stage. For instance, fiction filmmakers plan for editing during pre-production and shooting. Documentary filmmaker usually shots extra footages. When the material is chosen, the next thing is to join the shots. The most basic way of joining shots is cut. In the process of editing, editor can shape audience’s experience of the film by manipulating time and space.

    This chapter outlines the most basic information about editing a film. This provides viewer with a very basic and clear way of how editing works. The example analysis of four shots from The Birds gives the further answer of why cut? The specific analysis is very effective.

    This chapter gives me basic understanding of editing, editing is the foundation of creation of montage. It helps me understand from a flat and basic level. In conclusion, it is very useful and supportive for my research.
