For my first Media 1 tutorial, we covered the basics of introductions and housekeeping, and essentially how to go about our tutorials for the rest of the course.

Our unofficial first assessment “Project Brief #1 – Lofi Media Self-Portrait” was assigned as an introduction of various things: ourselves to the class, exposure to presenting in front of an audience, the exploration of different forms of media, and to provoke an in-depth investigation of ourselves. Despite sounding like every high school orientation project ever, hopefully the content of our ‘selfies’ will be slightly more elaborate and meaningful than “I like soccer, so here is a picture of a soccer ball.”

When asked to define myself, like many other people, my automatic response is along the lines of ‘there’s nothing to know about me’ or ‘I’m boring.’ This project forces the personification of myself beyond how I can verbally describe myself, just by offering snippets of my life. I don’t really have any extraordinary inspirational figures or role models, no one I aspire to be like, and at this stage I believe about 40% of my personality is TV drama characters I have absorbed. I’ll have to do some deeper thought about my personality traits and my identity, hopefully without sounding too pretentious.
