Reading: “Blood in the Gutter” by Scott McCloud

This week’s reading was a little different, in that it was actually a comic.

Scott McCloud’s “Blood in the Gutter” analysis different kinds of comics, and the sort of transitions they use from frame to frame. He sorts these transitions into the following 6 categories:

  1. Moment-to-moment
  2. Action-to-action
  3. Subject-to-subject
  4. Scene-to-scene
  5. Aspect-to-aspect
  6. Non-sequitur

These categories can also be used to describe cuts in film editing. I found the way McCloud graphed the type of transitions used by different artists particularly interesting, and wonder whether you’d end with similar graphs if you were to do the same things for films, or how much they would differ from genre to genre. Perhaps dramas would feature more aspect-to-aspect transitions than comedies or action films? Or there may even be a notable difference between feature films and television programs?
