symposium #6

Today’s discussion was pretty deep to say the least…

There were three questions that were posed to the class, the first of which catching my attention the most.

This question was “Can technology progress independently of art & culture?”

I find this question really interesting because its one of those things that when i first think about turns my mind into a big huge mess – which means its a good question to me. When this happens, the first thing i do is define the key words in the question [technology, art and culture]. As Adrian pointed out, this immediately brings us to a bit of a paradox in that everything we humans do and create is on a  technological basis… language itself is a the technology along with the pencil and even fire. To me this leaves me wondering how we differentiate art and culture from technology, because it must all then have a technological basis. This would lead us to the answer of no.

However, it was also addressed that there is a logic to technology outside of ‘us’ and when we put aside the previous argument, it becomes clear that although heavily interlinked technology can progress to a certain extent independent of art and culture. It may not progress to its full potential, but there is still a progression there. And that made pretty good sense to me!
