Reflection:

In assignment 2, we choose the purpose of our group is to explore Westerners’ understanding of the relationship between death and the attachment of the body. And we gave this group work a name called “attachment”, which is the title that can cause interest and trigger thinking. Through presentation, we have received advice from teachers and classmates, and hope that we can narrow the scope of the topic. After discussion with the team members, we finally decided to narrow the theme to death and the unburied of human emotions and experiencesand this is a way to contemplation of life. We also gave this topic a name, which is called ‘Buried’.

We try to express that apart from the obvious it is also in the sense that people bury their emotions with regards to death because it isn’t spoken about. When we lose loved ones, the sorrow we feel is the price we pay, let us pay the price in life. The mentality of losing loved ones is to understand that this loss will never disappear. Whether you like it or not, you have to endure and accept it, but in order to live well, you have to turn this loss into positive things in a variety of different ways so that you can be your best versionand never be scars Tired, flawed, unstoppable.

In assignment 3, we still have two main media works, which are video and audio. As our work is about exploring the taboo subject of death, how we identify with it, how we cope and how we heal – and if we ever really do. We aim to collect different accounts from anonymous participants with regards to their relationship with the subject matter at hand from an informal and brutally honest perspective. In the video, we keep the old item: the fresh rose, and add the blood and human body as well. You can be shown three parts in it, which are religion, symbolize and afterlife. At the end of the video, we try to make many small screen to broadcast different scenes. It is like a human memory. When a loved one or a friend dies, your acquaintance with him or her will exist in your memory, just like a jigsaw puzzle.

For the audio, we mainly focus on the interviews this time which are talking people‘s ideas on what is death and how to get out of the shadow of losing loved ones. Looking further we are analysing the state of the human mind and our inability to cope with the inevitable. That reality and truth are virtues that are supposedly valued yet many fall into silence or denial as a coping mechanism. This is detrimental to our wellbeing as we are incapable of healing and facing our fears. In the interviews, there are people who really encountered losing the loved ones, they told us their real thinking and feelings about death and their emotions that moved us.  When the interview clips are played, there will be background music added, in order to rendering the atmosphere, and also makes that the whole audio will not be very boring. This time, we try to make a smaller scape of our topic, only focus on the relationship between death and attachment. Both the video and audio want to show this topic.

We have a lot of broken mirrors in the exhibition, which are related to our videos and themes. Through the mirror, we can see many different pictures at the same time, just like the various pictures appearing in our minds, as if the fragments of memories are also bonded together in front of the eyes and appear in the mind. In addition, we use a projector to play the video, I believe this will make the audience feel like showing on the big screen, people feel that these are memories, but the memories are not real after all. In the final work, we combine video and audio. When audience sit on the chairs and put on the headphones, their attention is concentrated in the video and audio. The purpose of this exhibition is to use real people to cause the audience to think about the subject. We attach meaning to things within the physical realm and are unable to look beyond what we see and experience as something significant. In the case of the deceased we hold onto remnants of that being because we have no other way cope with the loss, thus inevitably torturing oneself. We hope that the audience can treat them with a better attitude when they think about it. Do not let themselves live in their own memory and cannot walk out any more. It will ultimately affect your physical and mental health.

We still have some regrets in the exhibition. In the original vision, we decided to use the projector and the mirror to reflect the video we edited at the same time, and cast them into different positions in the entire exhibition space, so that the audience is more engaged and more concentrated. However, after many attempts, we found that using a mirror to project video is a very difficult process, requiring the viewer to adjust the angle and position of the mirror. So finally, we gave up on this idea and used only two different projectors to project posters and videos. The mirror is placed on the table, complete and broken, so that the audience can understand our theme more.

‘Entangled’ in the world can be analysed its different meanings from many different angles. If it appears in a book of poetry, I think it can be interpret it as meaning a world which has a lot of interdependence. Where you can’t easily separate different parts of the world from the rest, since everything influences everything else in a sensitive way. The second situation is it showed in the physics area , it cannot be factorised into a product state of its individual components, all of them need to be connected. Usually things once involved in entangled, the feeling of those are complex or like mixed states, but I think pure states can be entangled too. In different situation, ‘entangled’ in the world must have different meanings. I also want to express my idea of it on the media work, any item will be associated with many things, it will not exist in this world alone.

I really enjoy this course during this semester. In this class, I try to learn about what is ‘entangled’ and deep explore it. I have learn the basic skill of using ‘Adobe Indesign’ which is difficult and spend me so much time. What’s more, this is a good chance for me to improve my skill on editing video and audio. Luckily, I met the kind group members and teacher, because you are all stand with me, I can finish this course successfully. Thank you for you guys and wish you best!
