Reflection (Assignment 4)

In this final project, we expand from our previous assignment along with the idea of people engaging in social world due to their boredom, which I think that when people get bored, they tend to absorb more on their phone. To expand from this idea, we decided to explore on people ‘attention’ towards online contents. By doing this, we create several different kind of attention span videos to test their attention and engagement. I think this test is in between testing a memory and attention. However, what we literally look for is the contents that caught the viewers’ attention most, some interesting elements that really received full attention from them. From an examination on presentation day, I looked at two participants results, they both got only around 50% out of all questions. The point is both got some correct answers but in different questions. Then we asked them what did you find most engaging? one answered the music, another answered the animal scene. Thus, it is not about memory but it is more about what they paid attention to most. Therefore, I think that it is quite well respond to our idea about interest and attention. Moreover, this also referred back to our decision why we made all clips together in one instead of separating. Because we want to examine about the attention paid towards different contents by many people more than focus on memory. The viewers are not expected to answer all quiz correctly, they are supposed to rightly answer what they interest in most.

In this project, we come across 4 types of online characteristics. First is the most distinctive and significant for our project, interactive. I think that our work demonstrates the idea of interactivity by providing audience with video contents and encourage them to interact with our work by paying full attention towards the videos. We give a direction to people about what they should focus on, however, in some clips, we just show the clip without any direction. From this point, we thought that by giving no direction, people will focus differently on dissimilar contents. Second, our project is also created to respond the idea of user-generated/contribute contents where the audiences will be part of a contribution. To make everyone contribute to the project, we create a quiz at the end after showing the video. Therefore, all participants’ answers will be allocated to an overall result where people can compare their answers with others as well. Moreover, we also use the concept of cross-platform to produce the project, few types of contents are all in together such as video linked from youtube, quiz apps, and Wix site. In our clips also featured with dissimilar contents: stop motion, time lapse, sound. With different types of elements, I think that there is more approach way to engage with the project. Nonfiction is one of characteristics that our project responds to as well. All clips were shot in actual time and real location. We did not create any fancy or fiction contents, there are no script, story or continuity in every video.

From these characteristics, our project is considered to be web specific, especially, it is featured with video and sound and it is produced on Wix which is an online website. Our work also requires the viewers to actually engage and participate in our contents, we need an actual interaction from them in order to complete and contribute to our project result. Our project can not be performed in a form of traditional media. For example, if our work was produced in newspapers, there would be no interaction with the contents except for reading and looking at them. We could create a quiz on paper, however, the result could not be compared to others and there is no program to immediately check the answer as well. Therefore, our project is literally fully exploited the ability of online space in order to produce it.

What I have learnt so far from making the small scale online project is that online space offers us an ability to do many things at the same time, under the same area. We can create different types of contents together in one project. As in our project, we combined videos, sound and quiz together and displayed them all in an online platform (Wix). Moreover, it is more accessible and it is also limited access. With accessing again and again, the idea towards that particular topic might also shifted over time. However, I would say that this idea can also be applied to traditional media as well. From my own experience, there is a teen fantasy novel called ‘The thief of Baramos’ which is my favourite book. I have read it since I was in grade 4 and now I still reread it over and over. I have realised that every time I read it I always get a different opinion about it, or even catch something new from the book that I have not noticed it before. However, there is exactly a distinctive dissimilarity between the production for a smaller scale project and  traditional media that I have found after considering about what I have learnt through this semester and my previous experience, the change and flexibility of the contents. Elements in traditional media could not be changed, especially when it is already published, unlike online contents that can always be changed. For example, in our project, we can change the quiz question whenever we want, or we can literally post new and more videos and those changes slightly affect the whole project.

Furthermore, I think that because of a flexibility and accessibility, it also answers why there is a big interest in online content. Online space offers many capabilities to people, therefore, various types of elements are possible to be provided in an online space—there are countless topics and contents. Moreover, those contents are always changed and updated. Besides, online contents can be produced by everyone. People do not need an organisation or granted permission to create or engage with online contents.
