MAIN IDEA (A ONE SCENE FILM)
“a dysfunctional family of 3 or 4 people (dependant on actors) a mother, father and child. Eating at a dinging room table, the house look wealthy, extravagant and over the top. The family juxtapose this with dead boring simple outfits, one colour neat and everything perfect.
the mother gets everything ready she sets up the table, establishes the scene pretty much organises things till they’re perfect, trying to control everything. Getting almost OCD about all the little things, like the knives and forks on the table adjusting them to the millimetre, walking past them coming back round and readjusting. the mother sits there for a long time by herself waiting
the father sit down at a table and a child comes and sits, awkward long pauses, lots of long shots. “he’s not coming” an empty chair shows in the scene. they eat in silence, perhaps small talk, a light chatter of conversation very plain and ordinary with an undertone of slyness.
then maybe a car pulls up outside and a bright light shines through the window and they all turn to look”
shots I want
- tracking shot along the length of the table, following the characters e.g. the passing of the salt starting at the father who sits down it then tracks the salt as he slides it to the son who then gets up and passes it to his mother who incidentally knocks it over. (METAPHOR for a perfect family being knocked over)
- an extreme close up of the salt spilt over, the granules and hold the shot on this for a while perhaps then a wide zoom out the the whole family sitting at the family.
- a close up of the mother who has an engagement ring on as brushes her hands on her cheek, dead pan, eye level mid to close up of her face looking straight down camera she looks down switch shot to father looking up and then same as before dead pan straight to camera eye level. He touches his chin with no ring on.
- really wide establishing shots getting in the long table with all characters on it, similar to Gregory Crewdson and American beauty
