The reading, briefly covers the concept and principles of form in film. One thing that was discussed was Formal expectations, for the audience to be actively engaged in art form by their expectations of whats to come. This can be closely linked to genre, for the Wizard of Oz, we discussed in class how it may be seen as a fantasy, musical or family film. With this in mind, we expect the film to be quite surreal, to include musical numbers and ultimately to end with all the problems solved. Our expectations also shift within the film for example when the wizard didn’t actually know how to send Dorothy home as we had thought early on. This directorial decision kept us engaged and curious.

The song “somewhere over the rainbow” can hold the explicit meaning of a young girl who is a dreamer and longs for something different. This song can represent escapism, and Dorothy’s character motivation.life. Similarly the directorial choices to portray her emotional journey was showcased through the colour change. Sepia dark tones in Kansis hints to views the lack of interest and freedom in her life which holds a stark contrast to Oz which is filled with bright colours representing a place of excitement and opportunity. These stylistic elements help contribute to audience understanding of Dorothy as one of the main characters and her emotional journey.

Films as artworks use many different techniques, forms and principles to engage us as viewers.
