St Kilda Film Festival 2015: Opening Night

One of the best bits about media student: getting the chance to get a free double pass to the St Kilda Film Festival opening night.

Held in St Kilda’s iconic Palais Theatre, right beside Luna Park, the front of the heritage listed building was lit up in bright blue with patterns projected all over it (not really like the cover image for this article).

The quality of the work was inspirational. Above all hat really stood out was the uniqueness of the concepts and the ability to express a big idea/story in a short amount of time.

A few that stood out

Flat Daddy – Matt Holcomb

T
he idea behind this film, a cardboard cutout of a husband for his family while he’s away serving in the military, was a very touching one. The way this simple could cause upheaval in a family made it even more so. Kat Stewart played the mother and did an excellent job.

Mia – Wouter Bongaerts

An animation about a little girl who gets lost in a big city .This animation stood out with it’s blend of 2D and 3D animation to portray varying aspects of perception.

Five Minutes More – Josh Moore
There was a bit of hype about this one before going in because we’d heard it was a 45 second horror film. The idea of presenting a film in 45 seconds is intriguing. It turned up to be good, definitely jumped at the end but the idea felt like it had be done before (don’t want to give it away)

Pink – Lynne Vincent McCarthy
This film stuck about because it dealt with pedophilia, a highly taboo subject. It dealt with it in a unique way though. The tension in this film was very well concieved.

This was a great event to go to as an aspiring film maker and really had me wanting to go to more festivals and also start my own work.
