Reflection
Our media work ‘Oddity’ was effective in showcasing racism in society and lack of diversity. We did this by showcasing a divide in-between societies by creating two separate factions. These factions included the human race and the alters (aliens). Throughout our film, it provokes thought within the audience and allows them to question the judgments of the characters and how far they are willing to go in order to achieve their objective.
Our film was effective in establishing the effects of war and divides within society through the use of storytelling and character development. The costuming displayed helped convey this with the alters wearing black to represent danger and the humans wearing white to showcase their godly nature. The ‘No Ulters Allowed’ posters that are displayed throughout our film allow audiences to see the divide between both factions and is very effective in displaying themes of war. Although these aspects were effective the number of flashbacks included in the storyline could create some confusion with the process and development of the narrative.
Our film is aimed to trigger the heartstrings of the audience, by showcasing themes of loss and loneliness. These themes, have been developed to establish the effects of war and isolation. The flashbacks are aimed to engage with audiences and question the role of the characters in the film.
If I was to do this work again I would eliminate a majority of the flashbacks. I have chosen to do this as during post-production I found that the flashbacks had the ability to confuse audiences with the narrative of the film. I would hire actors to play the key characters to save time and be more efficient. I would also take out some dialogue as some scenes that are dialogue heavy can allow audiences to lose focus and become unattached to the film.
