There are three main part of this week’s lectorial: Introduction to project brief 3, skills on reading academic writing, and collaboration.

For the project brief 3, we were asked to make a 2-minute video of other person, who can be your friend, your family member, partner or workmate. It has to be a real person. This media portrait is a little bit different from project brief 2. This time we have to combine the portrait with found footage. At first, I was quite confused about found footage, but I seemed to understand it after watching several videos in class. There’s one example below.

We were also asked to record at least one component of our original footage with a piece of equipment borrowed from the school, either a Zoom H2/N recorder or Sony MC50 video recorder. I was excited about this, because I had never used this kind of equipment before. This is a great time to learn.

The second part of the lectorial is talking about reading academic writing.

There are some practical steps:

  • Download [and print] the article
  • Write notes and highlight as you go
  • Don’t just start reading from the beginning … to ‘read’

academic writing requires a different strategy i.e.

reading key sections (abstract, intro, conclusion);

looking at structure … before plunging in to a

beginning to end read.

  • Skimming is a necessary/legitimate step of doing it

‘properly’ (not an indication that you can’t!)

And GOALS IN TERMS OF ‘SUCCESSFUL’ READING

  • A brief summary of the main ideas of the text
  • An evaluation of the text (strengths and

limitations)

  • Commentary on its relevance for your purpose

(e.g. background research on an essay topic OR

creative inspiration for a creative/technical skill

you are developing)

Last but not least, we focused on collaboration. It’s an essential and often substantive part of working life in the media and creative industries (as well as this degree). So far there’s no cooperation with others. The project 1 and 2 were completed by ourselves, we didn’t need to work with others. But this time, we have to shoot other people, which involves collaboration. We are supposed to communicate with whom we will work with, to understand others, to accept different ideas. I think there may be some troubles during the whole project, but I’m sure there would be full of fun and it is a really great chance to learn how to work with people, which is benefit to us, to our further media study.
