WORKSHOP VII — PURPOSE

Dang. I missed out on an interesting workshop this week. Similar to the week prior, groups were made to make a short film with a set of constraints in mind. While in week six we worked with a long singular shot, and this week students worked on a sequence of shots that could be played out in order with no post-production – a stipulation that as based on the White Gloves Film Festival.

In both, there was the notable absence of editing, which I think at times we take for granted. Due to this, there has been more of an emphasis on planning a film production. Making sure we become diligent in preparing well and considering problems before committing to actually filming something with people’s time (and theoretically money) at stake.

‘We’ll just fix it in post’ – while often said in jest is also telling of a ‘we will think about it later’ mentality.

Similar to photography or audio recording if the correct/intended information is not captured initially, there may well be no saving it in post production as a layperson may assume. In this situation where the footage attained does not serve the film, no editing in the world can fix that. Metaphorically speaking I have started to see parallels in audio/film editing and sculpting. You can cut/chisel away at the material but you cannot add content/material at this stage in the process – you can only remove it, leaving the chosen pieces to remain. Imbued with meaning, function, and purpose.
