TRIGGERING AN EXPERIENCE

I like the idea of looking at media as a way of sending a message and triggering an experience. I reflected on the type of media that I make (eg: my YouTube videos) and decided that they weren’t doing a very good job of sending a message. Sure, has a message but it isn’t really meaningful or at least I don’t consider it to be. A lot of it is just centred on myself. A lot of vlogs and videos of me talking about certain aspects of my life. The overall message I seem to be sending is ‘hey! look at me’.

I want to create content that reaches people and affects them in a meaningful way. In saying that, I don’t want my content to be too serious. Silly videos can affect people in a meaningful way in that it can make them laugh or it can brighten their day. Whatever the kind of video I make, I think I will always look at it in a way of triggering an experience. I think that has been something that has been lacking in my videos.

I went through my Favourites playlist to find videos that are personally meaningful to me.

I love SourceFed but even I took a look at the title and was like ‘this sounds stupid’. It was but I laughed so hard when I watched it. It’s meaningful to me because it made me happy and because it’s honestly become one of my favourite SourceFed videos just based on the fact that it made me laugh so much.

This next video is much more serious than the last one. This one is meaningful to me because I personally was inspired by it. I was inspired by Olan’s passion and drive and I really think I cried the first time I watched it. I come back to this video whenever I feel low and always feel motivated after it.

My approach to creating content has been changed by this idea even if just a little bit. I’ve always said that I wanted to make content that represents Asian people and Asian culture but I always said that referring to the future. I realise that I can create content now that is meaningful. I can create content now that has representation in it. Everything I make can be meaningful to someone.
