Edward de Bono

The six thinking hats were used today in the tutorial as we discussed one another work in depth.

This meant we were not allowed to say it was “Good” or “Not so good”, feedback had to be in depth and focussed, specific and to the point. Each hat represents something – what did you like, your initial response, something that didn’t work or creative possibilities. This was helpful for me because I found myself paying close attention to everyone’s work. I found whenever I tried to use the black hat – something that didn’t work, I always phrased it in a way that leant towards creative possibilities, or some way they could have improved it. It is particularly challenging to state something negative without supporting it with a positive. I hope to be able to use these hats in analysing my own work in the future.
