Ready Camera One – A4 Blog Post 2

In week 9, I was assigned as producer, camera operator for ep.1 and GFX operator for ep.2. The roles assigned were a broad range that I have yet to try during live production, and for that, I am excited about the challenge. In addition, I am most nervous about operating the GFX in episode 2 as I lack the most knowledge in that department. On Monday, the writers and producers discussed what the structure of both episodes will be like, and brainstormed possible segment ideas, taking inspiration from late-night talk shows and other group’s segment ideas from the previous presentation. Having 4-5 producers, we intend to split the work over the two episodes, with me and Alice producing episode 2. We all collectively brainstormed and noted down ideas and estimated the runtime of each segment, including the improvisation in between, hoping to cover a 30-minute runtime.

Being a producer means having the responsibility of overseeing all steps of production. We gave the writers some space as they brainstormed about the segments and whacky plotlines that they could come up with. However, I sometimes noticed that I had the tendency to want to step in and contribute more, but I did not want to derail their brainstorming momentum. Although I had ideas of my own at the time, I was happy to let the writers have the fun of creating magic, ‘ The Charlie Show’, and stepped in if anyone needed assistance or an opinion on something. Furthermore, I decided to help out with creating the EVS stings and GFX for the show. I closely discussed what we wanted to include in the show with the other producers and writers, trying to incorporate an array of full-screen GFX, lower thirds, EVS stings with music, etc.

Moreover, this week was a busy week for us as we prepare for the first episode of ‘The Charlie Show’. We all have a rough idea of what the outline of the show is starting to look like, and we are clear with our assigned roles over the two episodes. I am excited for the following weeks working with the whole class for a big final production. For now, I will begin creating the EVS stings for the finalised segment ideas.
