Who is the practitioner and when were they practicing? What is the title of the photo or video you have chosen to analyse?

Korean, Nam June Paik was known as “the father of video art,” (The Art Story, para.1). Nam experimented with video and global connectivity from the early 1950’s to mid 2000’s just before he died in 2006. One of his creative pieces was ‘The Global Groove’, a weekly TV festival made up of music and dance from different countries.

With the photo or video you are examining when was it produced?

Global Groove was produced in 1973, however, wasn’t in galleries until it appeared in the Art Gallery of New South Wales between 10 January 2004-2008. The piece then appeared in the Kaldor Public Art Projects in the same gallery between 2 October 2009-14 February 2010.

How was the photo or video authored?

The global Groove was made on a digital tape with colour and sound in collaboration with John Godfrey. It was directed by Merrily Mossman, narrated by Russell Connor and filmed by Jud Yalkut and Robert Breer.

How was the photo or video published?

The Global Grove was produced by TV Lab on channel 13/WNET/. The first digital revolution, allowing artists like Nam Jun Paik to broadcast their work through imagery on television. The piece was also in art galleries all around the world for particular amounts of time.

How was the photo or video distributed?

Through the evolution of TV, similar works to the ‘The Global Groove’ were all broadcasted to viewers all around the world through channel 13. Channel 13 was known for all types of creators to get there hand on equipment to experiment and innovate. (H, Weinberg)
