Moments and Memories by Marlon McKinnon

This film is called Memories Fade, Moments Last. It is an animation that utilises the technique of rotoscoping depicting various moments in time in different styles and colours. It’s a reminder to live in the beauty of the moment, although we may be forgetful with time. This film was developed through a study of 18th century naturalism art which takes the mundane, momentary nature of everyday life as its focus. And the impressionist art movement which brought art out of the studio, into the world, and in the moment. The music is a piece by Romantic Era composer Robert Schumann, chosen as it represents a naturalistic approach to music, striving for an emotional or empathetic response rather than striving for musical or technical perfection.

For this screen project, we were encouraged to find a research topic and I was struggling to find the keywords for what momentary filmmaking was. Whether it was the film essay or something different. I came across the term of Naturalism. An art movement in theatre, painting, and even film. I’m always interested in finding the history behind different artistic movements and it was through naturalism I learned so much about the politics behind it. Naturalism and impressionism art perfectly captured the feeling I was going for, a slice of life, simple moments in time.
