Week#1 Workshop

Each week I will write a brief post outlining the activities we expect to cover in the workshops. Not all activities are expected to be finished in class. For every 5 hours in the course we spend face-to-face per week you are expected to devote and additional 13 hours to self-directed learning (i.e. reading, making, reflecting, posting).

How we use the workshop time will vary (and it is partly about getting you used to what it is like in a studio-based learning environment). There will be parts of the workshop when we sit and talk as a group, times when you get technical instruction, times when you are working individually or in groups on exercises or some of your assessment, times when you are presenting to the class and giving feedback to others on work-in-progress, times when we collectively try to solve problems that we have encountered. You will need your laptop for every workshop.

If you miss a class due to illness you can get any relevant documents from links in these posts. You will probably need to talk to your classmates to get more context and information about ways of approaching the tasks and their purpose. Your tutor will be able to take some questions but do note that we don’t have the resources to offer extensive one-on-one catch-ups. Think of the workshop as like going to work – there is a start time and a knocking off time. It’s a priority – schedule other things around it. You won’t last long if you don’t show up regularly and keep in touch with your employer. The rhythm will vary but when you are there you are expected to be present and active in appropriate ways.
