• how to pull apart a concept
  • how to engage more throughout my media making
  • I want to understand how to reflect the concept through media making in terms of audio
  • how do we gage in a deeper understanding of the topics that interest us
  • I want to understand the best way to communicate my ideas

How to make myself proud of my own work, why am I never satisfied, I want to be able to look back on something I”ve made and think that it’s original and creative and I want people to watch it and know I made it

How will any of what I’m learning right now matter in my future, am I wasting my time? Will my skills ever be valuable, I want to be reassured somehow that I do have a future in the media field. (this perhaps ties in with making work that I think means something because I want my work to mean something to others too).

I want to understand how people like Bogost come to think of all their amazing theories. How can I train my mind to think of things that no one else thinks about in order to surprise and delightfully confuse others how he delightfully confused me. I love things that blow my mind, and I want to be able to have this effect on others, yet I’m worried that I’m not original enough, how can possibly be original enough. My whole life has been learning things off of other people’s work, and with over 7 billion people populating this planet it’s hard to think that there are many ideas that no one else has thought of.

I want to achieve a properly planned piece of media, understanding the direction the piece is taking and the way it highlights its relations. To achieve a discussion or unraveling of an objects/activities relations through editing – eg. montage, split-screen.

I want to complete a piece of media that I am satisfied with; be able to show someone I know what I have achieved (both in terms of making and knowledge) in this studio, and how it has changed my thinking about things (given me greater perspective).
I would like these films to demonstrate an understanding of the studio, the skills practiced/learned both practical and conceptual.

I would like to be able to easily see the complexities and “”trueness”” of every single object, place (or anything).

Why? Because I think that being able to do this without struggle, and with clarity, would let me to live a life with an understanding and appreciation of ‘animist’ perspective. I don’t think I would ever fully adopt this perspective on life, however, I would be happy to know exactly where this kind of view is comes from, and would be able to relate to it and appreciate it.

I would like to be able to make documentaries in the future that reflect aspects, or even the whole concept of our productions with the Offenburg school.

Why? Although I am grasping the ways in which I can use film to reflect the concepts we are aiming to depict, I have not fully gotten their yet. Hopefully in the last part of the project I will create a film that depicts this to its best, or if not, even writing, chatting, and thinking more in the studio, that will leave me with a clear view of the topics discussed in class that will able me to carry them on in the future when I continue to make documentaries (or even any other films).

I would like to have a more holistic view on the concepts discussed in class, in regards to more philosophers/academics, and their opinions, criticisms, emphasises’ on the concepts.

Why? I think have a more holistic view on the concepts will allow me to see the topic discussed with a lot more clarity. I believe all the readings so far have been very knowledgeable, however I am looking forward to do as much reading as possible from now on until the end of semester to really gain the best understanding I can of the all the concepts that sort of hang onto one, which are presented in this studio.

For the next individual assignment, I would like to learn how to fully explore the concept of what it is to put the human at the centre.

This was in the Bogost reading, and although after reading and studying it I understood what it meant, I struggled quite a bit to actually apply the concept into the group assignment, particularly the essay.

This restricted me from exploring further into the way we used our object (room) and created it into something other than itself.

In terms of creating audio and visual media, I am confident that I will be able to complete this to the best of my ability. I’m excited to come up with new creative ideas, and apply the different concepts within the readings into these pieces.

What? The main aspect of this studio I am struggling with is the making of media itself. How to make “through” something is still a concept which I am trying to grasp. Applying rules to the making process certainly helps, however, I would like to incorporate these actions into my work in a more naturalised way. The process feels a little contrived – maybe I should learn how to like this process more? Perhaps I should go about doing that by spending more time with the camera/artefact/surroundings as Adrian suggested. Admittedly, it was interesting watching the process of an ice block melting during the third round of exchange with Offenburg. Noticing these small moments may heighten my final pieces.

Thinking about how I will apply this frame of thinking in my next work is quite difficult. Separating the work into three parts helps, but actually thinking of ways in which to make seems daunting at this point. Obviously we are only in a planning stage, so I am still hopeful that I can learn from the process, and that I still have time to learn from the processes in this studio.

Why? I would like to understand this process because I think it will help me to become a better storyteller, ironically. Adrian’s rejection of story in this studio has clarified how we think of media making in quite a one-dimensional manner. Without story, we are forced to look at the process itself, and understand the thought behind why we portray things in particular ways. Utilising the descriptive forms of lists will also aid my writing in the future. Description is something I have hoped to build on in the past, so I am excited to see what direction my future work takes. I am not willing to reject story altogether after this studio – perhaps I will consider it with less credence, but I think it has an important place in the world. Though, the studio has given me a new creative platform to abide by.

What I want to understand from making these films: I want to know why do we choose an object and then an activity to film that MATTERS to us, we have constantly been told to eliminate the idea of meaning and now we are bringing it back to us. Furthemore, doesn’t this also reflect the human element and conflict ontology? I get so confused as we bounce back and forth between filming things that matter to us but then having to distance ourselves. Maybe this is the idea of it but I struggle to see what I am going to learn from this as a whole?

What I would like to understand and why by the end of semester: How specifically will the theories of Alien Phenomenology benefit me in the future of my media degree. I feel like I have learnt so many different ways of looking at the objects/units through either ontology and metaphorism BUT where am I going to use this and how for my future studies? I do find this all really fascinating but I struggle to apply it to daily life/ other subjects/ further media communications studies as it is thinking in a way not the greater proportion understand.

As I further go into understanding of removing human pre determined goals to understand relationships between objects, I still find myself sitting at the basis that humans do revolve around everything. How do I change this? I want to again be able to apply this knowledge to outside of this studio. I find removing the human away from the centre very difficult, and even more so WHY. Why do we actually need to remove the human, it makes a lot more sense to me not to but I constantly feel like we are fighting just the way things plan out to be.

I would like to experiment with different types of media such as lightening, framing and sound to explore what it means to connect. Obviously connection is a crucial part of this course, so I want to see how I can connect things in a way that brings out the truth of an object or the relational value it holds around it. How can these aspects of film be exploited and used in a way that exhibits their uniqueness in film. Can these aspects of cinema be used in a way that can comment on certain agendas or themes? I think I would find it useful by centring my short stories on central themes that relate to the images but have the potential to exist for themselves, in that they act as anchoring points that can be explored further by the spectator. I haven’t though that much about the certain themes that could be interesting to have a look at, but I would like to explore something that relates to certain things that I have become interested in through this course. Themes such as reality, body and mind, and technologies could be useful starting points to work off. As much as I’ve found it interesting to write about the different concepts explored in the readings, I really just want to put these ideas into action and exhibit how they can be used in a medium that extends beyond words. Filming these concepts and putting them into practise is something that I am unfamiliar with and it would be useful to gain more skills by using these concepts in a practical way.

How we apply the theories we’ve learnt after this semester/after graduation? Can we apply these sets of theories in traditional/industrial filmmaking as well? I understand that we are exploring different way of noticing and we focus a lot on how post-industrial works. Does it only apply to post-industrial filmmaking?

Which platform does our work falls in? Is it more media/filmmaking or will it be more like an art form? ( Like blue poles’ painting)

How can I introduce noticing into day to day life?
-I want to understand how I can input what I have learnt into day to day life. Will it affect how I see things around me? What steps can I make to make this happen?

How will the readings we have studied influence noticing?
-I want to be able to fully understand the reading in reference to what we have learnt.

How can what I have learnt be put into my chosen career in the future?
-I want to be able to use what I’ve learnt in a practical sense in the workplace. Will what I’ve learnt be able to do that?

Between now and at the of this semester, I would like to understand more about the concept of making the short film and also relate them to course readings. in addition, it would also interesting to know the differentiation of telling the story in the film or a narrative and describing the film or make a description of a location in the film.
