Kaleidoscope tunnel

Olafur Eliasson’s colorful glass tunnel comes to life when you stroll through it one way, but if you look back over your shoulder, the panels appear black. The mesmerizing, kaleidoscope-like tunnel is comprised of stained glass triangles held together with bold, black piping. When viewed from one end, the tunnel is a rainbow of purple, pink and yellow, but the interesting one-way effect masks the colors from the other side. The Icelandic artist is known for engaging viewers in nontraditional ways by inviting them to interact with his artwork. He is known to incorporate air temperature, moisture, smells, light and walkways into his pieces to help guests more fully experience his work. In keeping with this theme, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art billed the one-way tunnel as “intentionally simple in construction but thrilling to behold, sparking profound, visceral reactions designed to heighten one’s experience of the everyday.”

Interpreting the gaps – lecture notes

  • Documentary wants to engage with the world and change our understanding of something. It is never just art for art’s sake. Documentary changes how we notice and experience our place in the world.
  • Art can be for itself: eg, ballet for ballet, music for music: not every song has to be a political commentary, etc.
  • Adrian mentioned a bot sending a news story, and more information can be found here.

This morning, two minutes after the earthquake struck, the USGS Earthquake Notification Service sent out the details of the earthquake and its location and strength to anyone listening. At that same moment, Schwencke got an email: a story on the earthquake was ready to be published. Though Schwencke gets the official byline, the Quakebot does the dirty work. Indeed, the biggest delay in the story going live was the time taken for Schwencke to roll out of bed, turn on his computer, double check the Quakebot’s accuracy, and press publish.

  • Designs change. We used to think we’d always need journalists, but do we? Based on the bot, maybe not.
  • Learn by doing –> By trying things out, as Anna said, we learn what we like: we learn what kind of filmmakers we want to be by making films.
  • Media specific criticism matters. TV has been defined by advertising = four ad breaks = a very specific structure.
  • Experience design –> eg the wedding example from last year.

Thinking, as we may.

Dr Vannevar Bush’s ‘As We May Think‘ is another article that has amazed me on some clever individuals’ forward thinking, a true testament to WHAT IF.

It’s also made me think about more recent possibilities that has come about because someone was brave enough to imagine and see their idea come to fruition.

The Hand Warmth Flashlight

Aside from these girls, Elif Bilgin, S.M. Sambavi and Ann Makosinski respectively, (all 16 or younger) making me feel extremely inadequate, they are outrageously inspiring.

Never stop spinning.
