  1. Writing and reflection

What is the difference between bearing witness, observing, noticing?

To understand the differences between witness, observing, noticing these three words, we need to know the meaning individually.

For the witness, the meaning from Dictionary.com is “to see, to hear, or know by personal presence and perception” as a verb, “an individual who, being present, personally sees or perceives a thing, a beholder, spectator, or eyewitness” for a none. Be simple, the witness is the meaning of a man touches to the change with his body or senses. There is a main object, the man, which means the man needs to be a part of the change, the man is related to the change, the man is in the change. For example, a man who has immigrated from a country to another country, this man witnesses the change of immigration, he can be the witness of immigration. But if the man didn’t immigrate, he cannot be the witness. Another very important aspect is the man needs to have evidence to prove, to show he is in and connect to the change. For example, a man changes his phone from functional phone to smartphone, he has these two different phones, and has used them, this man can be the witness of the change of the phone. However, if the man never uses the smartphone, thus he has no evidence to show he use the smartphone, so he cannot be the witness of the change of phones.

For the observing, its meaning from the directory.com is “to see, to watch, perceive, or notice”, compare to witness, observing doesn’t have a result, it is taking place, it is during the process. For example, the man observed the passersby in the street, he just saw the passerby, he didn’t know what changed for the passerby, or their result, he just saw the passerby, nothing else. The main object is also a man, but he doesn’t need to be related to the change, the man can be a bystander, for example, still the man observed the passerby in the street, he saw the passerby, but nothing changed himself, he is not related to the passerby.

For the meaning of noticing from Dictionary.com is “an announcement, or intimation of something impending, warning”. From the explain, noticing means something will happen but not happen right now, for example, the man notices the heavy cloud, it could rain later, but it is not rainy right now, so nothing happens right now. be simple, notice is the word to present the things not happen right now but could happen in the future with some evidence.

Then is the compare of the differences between witness, observing, and noticing. The timeline of each word is different, the thing for witness has already happened and has a result. The thing for observing is happening, of not has a result right now. the thing for noticing doesn’t happen right now, only some evidence can show the thing could happen. Then is the relationship between the thing and the man, when the thing happened to the man and made some change to the man, it is the witness. If the man doesn’t have a direct relationship to the thing, it is observing. If the man notices or thinks the thing will happen, it is noticing. These are the difference and the aspects to distinguish these three words.

3. Deconstruction

The documentary that I want to talk about is “A Bite of China”. It is a documentary made by the CCAV, talked about the food in different areas of China.

In this documentary, whether it’s framing, music use or editing, you can see the production team paid a lot of thoughts and patience in it. To trace the story of food on this vast land of China, from southwest to northeast, from northern Shaanxi to southern China, the production team’s footprint has spread throughout China. Alpine valleys, plains and hills, each with its own unique diet and food culture. How to reconcile these elements, which are almost different from each other, and avoid the clichés of breaking into the general food programs, has become a major problem in making such programs.

In addition to the nostalgia, this documentary respects labor and nature from the heart is also an important aspect. People are not difficult to notice. Every food in the film is extremely vividly portraying the trajectories of those producers. As the film wants to express, behind every kind of food, there is a natural gift of humanity and the wisdom and sweat of the producer. In a sense, this kind of heavy respect is far greater than the appetite that food brings to the foodies. In the film, there are many close-ups of these people living in the lowest part of society. The ever-changing and different foods are the best footnotes for their producers’ attitudes and beliefs. Whether it is Zouma’s smile, or the shy of Mr. Yao and his wife, or the forthright of the Northeast people, these ordinary people in all kinds of life are the atoms that build China’s behemoth, interpreting the national character of this country. Therefore, the Chinese title of this documentary is “China on the tip of the tongue”, the main aspect is China rather than the tip of the tongue, perhaps its English title, “A Bite of China”, more expressive expression of this.

There are many good points in this film, such as photography. Almost every image is carefully designed, and more importantly, the photographer’s gestures to those ordinary people, the close-up, slow motion, time lapse. After watching the film, it is like a montage, it is an excellent microcosm of the entire Chinese society.
