Post 3: How will your own work in this studio be informed by your understandings of social media, the data from the Sensis surveys and your examples of social media mentioned above? What information do you hope to gather from the Sensis data?
For the studio, my group and I are planning to create an Instagram page that takes a stab at current socio/political issues through memes. The focus will be serious issues that are happening in the world discussed under the context of comedy and satire. Through my own understanding of social media, this tends to be quite a popular method of communication through my generation in the online space. Comedy is king. It’s the most easily accessible and shareable content on social media— and if there are politically correct connotations to what is being shown then it just gives more reason to enjoy. What’s important to consider about what we are doing is how we choose to represent various subject matter. Much like the aforementioned Taylor Swift scandal, society is good at coming together for a hive-minded mentality. Cancel culture is alive and prevalent purely because so many opinions are shouting into the void without personal connections to the cancelled. In saying this, we hope to remain on the positive side of social media. Exposing truth in comedy is the goal, and through that a positive woke-minded community emerging. The information we would like to gather from the Sensis data will be more tailored towards a younger generation and where they get their news sources from. There is an inundation of information presented forth on any of these social media platforms, and attaining answers to questions like: ‘How reliable do you think the news is that you see online?’ and ‘What social issues are our audience most interested in?’ would be valuable in deciding the when, where and what’s of our groups work.
