In this week’s class, we discussed about moonshot thinking. This reminds me of Elon Musk’s company SpaceX. SpaceX was born with the desire to immigrate to Mars, but before that, the cost of rocket launch remained high and did not seem to be reduced. Eventually, SpaceX not only became the first commercial company to successfully launch rockets, but also achieved a magnitude reduction in costs and rocket recovery. I realized that my mind had been confined to a built-in framework and that I had always sought to optimize within what had been created by those who had gone before me. I was afraid to step out of this comfort zone because it meant failure for me to a large extent. The seemingly unchallenging ambitious goal of moonshit thinking forces us to think outside the box and use first principles to find breakthroughs that, even if they ultimately fail, bring greater change and reward than ordinary goals.
I believe this way of thinking will help me to be more daring in my imagination when I conceive of assignment 4, and to be brave in expressing my ideas with my team members, even if it sounds very unrealistic.
