The sequence of this observational montage film is connected by the unity of time, 3pm in Carlton Garden, in which film starting from a chatting scene of people in their break extending to different scenes happened in the park at the same time. In order to offer audience a feeling of 3pm in Carlton Garden, I picked up some different footages that each represents different mood and when put them together it makes the mood of 3pm in Carlton Garden. For example, the tradies sitting on bench chatting and having chips offers an easy, funny and relaxing feeling of break, while the old man sitting on the bench alone made me wonder and unsure whether he was relaxing or thinking. The rhythm of this film is bit slow and meandering, in order to make audience marinate in the each moment and enable summarise a general feeling of Carlton Garden. The beginning and the end of this film are especially added to tie up the story, in which beginning is a chatting scene of tradies and the end is a lonely lady eating her sandwich but particularly happy, and this intended to let audience know enjoy each beautiful moment whether alone or with someone. This film also includes some landscape footage, like fountain, old building and lawn to let audience know the texture, colour and pattern this location has offered. For example, green and white make most of Carlton Garden. In order to identify Carlton Garden, the main focus of this film is on providing informations of how people engage with Carlton Garden and how they present themselves within it.

This collection, of Melbourne CBD, involves a variety of different locations and objects with a specific focus on pedestrians’ behaviours, cafe environment and street culture. It mainly focuses on portraying pedestrians in Melbourne CBD area, subjects varies from local labours to tourists. Many places from this collection are tourist attractions in city, and it was interesting to see what has been most valued by the tourist. We planned to explore the relationship between people and CBD street culture, such as coffee, old architectures, bars. Alice and I decided to wander around in the area around Bourke street and Swanston street since there is the highest amount of population as well as most diverse population. There are photos of people waiting, kissing goodbye, taking photos and talking, and the reason why I choose to record those is that the interesting chemistry it made with the certain location and background. The focus I put for this photography is people, how their behaviour fit or make a chemistry with the city background, for example, there was an old lady crossing the road slowly with her walker while everyone else walking very fast( Fg. 11), which made an interesting contrast. It is a very diverse district with different groups of people. There are some distinguishable difference for different area. For lower Bourke street and Little Collins street, they present a more welcoming and local environment( Fg. 1,2,4,5,6,7,9,11), and tourist groups(Fg. 5, 6) makes up the enormous population here. While in upper Bourke Street and Little Collins Street, it is a completely commercial office area where people all wear suits and walk fast( Fg.3). Besides, there is one photograph shows the relationship between people and technology, that there is an interesting scene happened in a Cafe that an old lady read a newspaper alone, wearing a pair of AirPod, which is very elegant and modern(Fg.9). In a photo of a Christmas tree and a group of tourists(Fg.5,6), there are many Christmas trees, bunch of tourists and many retails. The way people use digital camera photograph the architecture as well as the way they dress, for instance, wearing a big backpack that helps us identify them as tourists, and the time of year, either November or December.
1st photograph essay
It is my first time to have class in Brunswick campus, and I’ve dreamed about it for a long time. The class is 9:30, I was in a rush this morning since had many drinks last night. On the tram 19, I was nervous and excited, and I was wondering if I went to fashion school instead of media what would I be now. The weather was stunning, I felt even better because I did makeup today for Brunswick campus. The class was about fashion trend, which was fascinating, during the class I’ve always had an idea of taking photos in here. Campus is just few blocks behind the Sydney Road, there are supermarkets but not Woolworth or Coles, textile stores, vintage shops, it feels so Melbourne while not Melbourne. Brunswick offers a sense that feels young while extremely peaceful, that old lady pushing the shipping cart on the street passing by a crew of teenagers carrying a big luggage each of them. It was so quiet both in campus and in Brunswick, maybe because I live in South Yarra that I compared Brunswick with Chapel street, I have to say these 2 places are similar in an extent. Anyway, chapel street is always making me feel crowded and fast. When I past a fabric shop, I stoped and looked inside, there were a few students picking fabric. They had their hair dyed, and wore big hoop on ear. I didn’t stop for long, I moved fast walking along the street, however, I was always hoping I can get into fashion industry. I love the way people still maintain the shopwindow as same as old, which the way people smile in old advertising seems so natural and genuine. I couldn’t help to wonder about my future when I was on tram back to city, ‘what would happen after finishing one course in Brunswick or after me graduating from uni?
Write about what you want from this studio
- Write about what you want from this studio (COMPULSORY). What do you think this studio is? Outline your goals and desires. Consider the Studio Prompt, Brief and Aims from the course descript
Firstly, ‘Real to Reel’ this studio is teaching us to create non-fiction media project. This studio is arranged to help us improve our skills of media production through reflecting works from arts masters in first half semester. Regarding to researching and reflecting on professional works to improve our skill on capturing the real world in this course, I think this is the part I would pay more attention and effort on because the process of analysing others’s work is also the way pushing us to think, reflect and learn. In addition, this studio is more about techniques and practical skills unlike ‘making media’. Speaking of improving practical skills on producing media practice, I even had no idea how to take a photo or edit the film. So when I found out this studio is really helping us improving practical skills on media production, I felt relieved. Keeping reflecting from others’s work is a way to learn skill and improve your capability, for media production I think this is the best way to get inspired and then produce your own work. Another great thing happed to this studio is that the tutor has filmed his own film and won many awards, and this therefore encourages me to work even harder to get essential improvements. To be more aware of how to capture and select accurate materials from real world to convey the message, and this is one of improvement I want to get from this course. Another particular progress I want to get from this studio is that I hope I can learn editing via more advanced and professional softwares instead of iMovies. Last but not least, I’d like to have tutor guide and help us in the progress of media practice producing, for example, help us figure out a better way of storytelling.

Activity 2
Doc 6:
The first video is a documentary of 2 hand-pulled noodle masters, and the second video is an a commercial video advertising of a noodles restaurant.
For this first video which is a documentary, it is made up by many components, such as row footage of making noodles, and the self narrating.
For the second video, it is very short as an advertising video, it is basically a single take of process of pulling noodles with ancient chinese music.
Second one is a commercial advertising.
The first one, is telling the unknown story behind the noodle master. It shows us the process of making noodles and also explores the motivations of becoming a chief,
The first one is better than second one in representing the real world, because it has real characters in the video and they are well dedicated portrayed. Besides, the narrative is well demonstrated in the first video, which the part of telling what makes them a chief in the video makes the documentary more touching and understandable.
