Week 6 Lecture(Reading)

The social media has made privacy an open privacy book that allows friends, acquaintances and even strangers to know about the private things about one person. It has accelerated the whole keeping your parents in the dark situation to keeping many strangers aware but still wanting your parents to know nothing about your privacy. In this information era, teens are very likely to share their personal interests and moods online which allows certain groups of people to see as they have set privileges of the information they posted.

Teens must be the most frequent users of social media and they are doing it to satisfy their inner needs which are to be concerned and to be seen. But this does not mean that teens do not care about privacy. They do. And a lot. Teens are putting those things online because one, they are eager to be agreed on something from others, a bigger group out of their own space; and two, they would want to have a platform to show themselves. Parents are often caring too much and controlling too much and there are some things that each teenage would not want to let their parents know. Privacy is crucial to teens and parents should understand this as they too enjoys and protect their privacy from their children.

Social media platforms have created many tools to help people to set groups and to separate information so people can choose what contents could be shared to all publics and what contents to be kept by themselves or only a special group of people which they selected. In fact, the online social media platform is a cloud diary which enables people to share their views and keep their own secrets in the same time.

Week 5 Lecture(Reading)

Shooting interviews is very funny as it will record everything and by utilizing different angels and using more cameras to shoot cameras in cameras, which would create a deeper layer of shots. People reflect differently under the camera and they are also influenced by the surrounding elements.

It would be perfect if the interviewer would know how to ask questions and deliver the sense to the interviewees in the right way. Interviews could ask the interviewees some questions which would make their audiences expecting to see. What is more, it is critical for the interviewers to decide how to make each interviewee fits to the central idea of the film. The technique is about leading and to lead the interviewers to the point that the interviewers want to reach. Try some specific questions or questions with strong leading functions, and maybe they will work.

In each story, there is an antagonist and a major conflict. Digging deep into the story and to find out the specialty of them and then focus on the right part is the way to make a good film. The interviewers’ job is to dig deeper and explore more. It is all about finding more examples and stories that are related to the assumed topic and that are attractive enough to draw audiences.

Interviews should be determined to guard the conversation to be the topic and aspect that they want. Interrupting or redirecting the conversation can help lowering anxiety of the interviewees, and it is very important to ease the nerve of them in order to have a better film. The interviewer is the key factor in the whole interviewing process because from organizing the interview structure to leading to the result, the interviewer needs to be sure to have a precise plan in mind.

Lecture 4

In the Chapter Four: The Clarity of the Craftsman of the book So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport, the author continues the subject of how to create a compelling career and how people, regardless in what step of their life, build a career that is responsible, persistence and valuable. Cal Newport, holds the opinion that people should plan less and do more when they consider about their career path. And the most important thing for people to do is to love what they are doing instead of hesitating. Cal Newport discard the cliché about the passion mindset which encourage people do whatever they and believes passion could lead to unmeasurable power to help them in completing their works and create a new form of mindset that people should love what they are doing and start instantly to create a desirable career that is best for their life experiences.

The story of this chapter starts with Jordan Tice, a professional guitar player of the New Acoustic style, music is almost what drives him in daily practice and his largest passion. Jordan Tice’s parents are musicians and he practices guitar as his daily basis. The everyday practice of Jordan Tice is what most attracted to Cal Newport, the most valuable quality of Jordan Tice in this story is he practice bluegrass guitar as his daily necessaries, no matter if there is a show or if it was just a day off for him, Jordan Tice always practice guitar and try to do a little better than he did in his work. Cal Newport states that passion for an industry is not enough if people want to complete a desirable career, the most important thing is to adopt a habit that keep working on the career need of their life, in another word, love what they are doing. The sentence in the chapter “there’s something liberating about the craftsman mindset: It asks you to leave behind self-centered concerns about whether your job is “just right,” and instead put your head down and plug away at getting really damn good. No one owes you a great career, it argues; you need to earn it—and the process won’t be easy.” points out the reality of people’s career path, which is there are no easy successes in the world at all and the most important practice for people to do is to earn a great career by doing it a lot and right away.

Indeed, there are theories about success states that people should “do what they love” instead of “love what do”. Steve Jobs in his speech states that “You’ve got to find what you love.
The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle.” That inspired so many students according to the passion mindset, however, there is a disadvantage about the passion mindset, which is before start a career, people who believes in the passion mindset would spend a lot of time on looking for what they really passionate about since everyone has different life experiences and there are just a few people know what they love at a very young age. Moreover, every industry has its bright side and dark side that is contains gains and losses while working, it is hard to decide what people’s real passion is when they are practically working. Thus, Cal Newport raised the theory of the craftsman mindset, which is people should firstly do all what they need to do in a career to transfer from a theory that asking what the job offers you to a practice that what you can offer the world while working. Newport also clarified the differences of the passion mindset and craftsman mindset as “The craftsman mindset offers clarity, while the passion mindset offers a swamp of ambiguous and unanswerable questions.”

There is a study of Michigan U that invite several of the school’s staff and ask them if they are doing what they really passionate about, one third of the sample answered yes and another two third of people think they were not doing what they want and they are still looking for a chance to do what they are passionate about. However, the result of the study shows, the elder people are more satisfied with their jobs than the younger school staffs, which is to say, not all people could find what the job that interest them at a young age and there is possibility that peopled could not really find a perfect career path before they try to do the right things in their work. Newport claims that no matter of how people feel about their job at the moment, adopting the craftsman mindset will be the foundation for them to build a compelling career. Gladwell also create a 10,000 hour rule in dialog to the craftsman’s mindset, which states that people should pay hard work on a certain industry for more than 10,000 hours before they like the career. The craftsman mindset is highly practical. For myself, I am passion about the media industry and currently in the studying stage of the industry, however, with very limited practical experiences in the industry, I could not say for sure that media industry is what I love to do for my life time. People’s life are idiosyncratic and there are always more possibilities. However, to realize what I feel about the media industry, I should start by understand the industry and put media practices as my daily basis to create a compelling career path in the media industry.
