I found cut is really difficult when doing last project that the video cut costed 6h. However, it is not so hard when accomplishing this project. The reason of such condition may be that the contents of this time’s shooting contents were interview and were smooth which were easy to be edit and costed lesser time, or that I became more familiar with Premiere Pro. It is also the biggest achievement of mine since term begin.
This project was an interview. I was required to interview a person (the closer the person was the better). Under the premise of enabling others to know the person, the interview contents and questions were determined by myself. I interviewed a overseas student who learned violin in my home and studied in senior high school. An idea occurred to me that I can ask her feelings after coming to Melbourne and being suitable to Melbourne life, and desirable future major. Telling individual experience is always easy for people. After thinking well the interview contents, the most important part — shooting was followed. The editing itself was not so difficult as long as you had to think all about the required shooting method, shooting perspective, and light etc. And the shooting shall be correct and smooth, which was the most difficult part. Like the practices of former classes, preparation works shall be done before shooting. You should have a whole storyline in your mind, and then arranged where to stop or where to change perspective based on the storyline. In addition, you should consider additional material shooting based on the answers of the interviewee. For example, the interviewee of my video told me that she has adjusted to local life and can do some things within her power, like recharging myki card and buying things by herself, and I shot scenes about these things.
There were not many problems in sound effect. Since we shot the video indoor, there was no noise from background and there was no need for microphone. The only problem was the selection of background music. My first idea was to ask the interviewee to play a strength of violin because her violin performance was great and confirmed to the theme of the video, and then I had no need to find other music online. However, I found that the volume of violin was too loud when editing after finishing recording since the violin was string instrument. Such loud music went against to the own sound of the video and I had to change. Then I chose piano to play music. However, at the tutorial of the eighth week, a classmate pointed out that the background music was not properly confirm to my video after seeing my video. I am still thinking about the background music when writing this reaction. I believe that there will be great results.
I also learn a lot from this project than last project. Firstly, I know that, instead of shooting what you want and leaving all works to later — stage editing, basic ideal and outline shall be thought of before shooting, like the shooting perspectives and other key aspects. And you should better control the camera during shooting. While for editing, I realize that I should see all materials and extract the parts which are necessary or can be used. This are also the works of professional media worker. After finishing this video, I have seen the videos of some TV programs and interview and found their cuts were smooth and complete, and they cut and integrated important words of the interviewee other than broadcasting all words of the interview. This is also the key part of my learning. I believe that learning more methods and tools about cut can better facilitate my future cut program and works.
