My Way of working

Through the first few weeks of learning directing, I am awared director’s job is more demanding than I thought, and they need to have a more professional and comprehensive ability. Some of my way of working has changed slightly. In my previous short films shooting, I avoided communicating with people. However, one of the essential skills of a director is to communicate effectively.

Since the first week of the audition with Jeni, I have taken the first actual step in communicating that while it is important to encourage and affirm the actors’ performances, it is important to give appropriate direction and advice. Audition is essentially a screening exercise in performance flexibility, where the actor can be directed and the director must give direction to the actor’s performance. In my case, I have been gradually balancing the bound between directing control and releasing the space given to the performance to actors.

It has brought a fresh perspective to consider when I am in the directing process. Before this semester, I was impressed and curious when we were talking about actioning. I do not even think it is that essential and simply ignore it. Whereas actioning not only provides time and atmosphere for actors to step into their roles, it helps them to resolve their doubts about the script, define their It also gives the director a more comprehensive understanding of the script, the themes, the characters, etc. For example, when I worked with Byron Butler and Yuechen to add emotion to each line of dialogue in the script “A Rose I Become,” each time rereading gave the characters a new understanding and tone. This helped me to find out whether it was appropriate to present the line in such a way, whether it was logical enough, and whether the tension of the plot was enough. Within this process, the director can find the feeling in it, this feeling will give the director a lot of inspiration, and how to adjust their play? How else can I make a scene more interesting? How can the scenes become more tense? This is quite beneficial to film creation. Hence,carefully mull over the narrative style of the script, and I will use this session in my future film directing process.

Therefore, I wish that in the future, actually in the process of directing film creation, it is not only communication with actors and aesthetic improvement but also a way to keep knowing myself and exploring the world. Observing life more, keeping curiosity and motivation, and maintaining the basic accumulation in the field of film directing.
