This week in our studio we did our assignment 2, which is to produce a 1-2 minutes multi-cam scene. We were assigned to different group with different script, we have take through what crew roles that we wanted to do. I was assigned to be the producer in this group. During the production, i have talk closely to the director about what her vision of the scene and the camera position should be and other medium that she might want to use. One of the things i did is to memorise our crews name and roles (fail), but i think it is important cause when I’m on the floor or control room if there is an accident with the equipment or missing crew i can react quickly with which people i should go for and reach them immediately. In previous production i did, my role was often camera operator, recordist and editor. They were involved mostly post-production process, also this time we were worked in one location and we edit along the show goes on. One thing that i noticed is that how floor and control room communicate, headphones is the main communication tool that we use and it is confusing sometimes cause you listen to everyone and you need sort it out which one is your responsibility and not to mixed up with others. In our production, we were struggling with the audio, because we need the actors to clap for us to sync the audio. When director told floor manager to clap, because there are so many people talking at once floor manager was confuse as she is the one to clap. We get the clap at the end but it is one of the aspect that we need to work on in the future. I think in our group we did a good job produce this project consider most of us are unfamiliar with multi-cam set up.
I was also in another group called “Roseheaven”, my role was camera operator on number 3 camera. This group was short on crew member before production so we haven’t done much planning, but we slowly figuring our the frame and blocking while we doing rehearsal with the actors. I think from my point of view as a cam operator we did a great job, the director is encouraging and very clear about the shots, so we haven’t got much issue with camera and on the floor.
As a audience, it was quite interesting to watch a multi-cam production. It is similar to theatre, you are able to watch everything going on but we do can go back to a scene and re-do it. It is also similar to films after the edit but the difference is that when we as a audience we can not see an over the shoulder shot and we able to see the other person’s facial expression.
