Final reflection – Zephyr

Our final edit of Tilly and her brand ‘remorse’ engages our audience through multiple different ways, in particular the chosen demographic. Tilly is a young individual who keeps up with the current trends and is extremely interested in Melbourne and outer fashion schemes. We chose tilly as she was a strong candidate who has a creative passion for fashion that we wanted to present. We aim to showcase Tilly’s journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs she faces as a young designer navigating the ever-evolving fashion landscape. Through this, we hoped to inspire our audience and create a deeper connection amongst the themes of personal expression, creativity and passion, all of which strongly connect to Tilly’s narrative. As a group we decided that tilly’s story and passion would resonate with our target audience of 18 – 35-year-olds.

Throughout the creation of this docuseries, our goal was to authentically capture the creative process of Tilly whilst also effectively communicating the intended learning outcome: to produce, at a professional level, a short documentary that addresses the pitch deck.  We aimed to showcase Tilly through her creative force and challenges that she faces as a young creative. The most successful aspect of the finalized project was the narrative. The narrative of tillys story focused on her struggles with perfectionism and the positive aspects of her overall passion and creativity which we believed would resonate and connect with our audience. Whilst exploring this narrative in the final short documentary we explored her journey where we were able to illuminate the challenges of her expectations as well as certain industry aspects relating to mass production and sustainability.

As we explored this narrative in the final edit, we crafted a multifaced portrayal of Tilly that invites viewers to connect with both her personality and fashion ambitions. Through the blend of intimate interviews consisting of A-roll footage. Behind the scenes footage, and dynamic B-roll footage we hoped to capture the essence of her persona and designs.

Each element of the documentary was carefully designed to reinforce the theme of balancing perfectionism allowing audience to connect with Tilly not just as a designer, but as a relatable individual navigating the complexities of her artistic path. Alongside this, we added a portion of themes surrounding sustainability that Tilly employs within her designs and one-off clothing pieces that she crafts herself, using this as a part of the narrative allowed for the edit to flow showing multiple layers of tillys process.

One challenge that was identified in our final project and edit was Tilly’s on camera presence during the face-to-face interviews for the A-roll footage. In her delivery, I believe it lacked a certain level of engagement which I think detracted from the final edit making it not quite engaging enough, which brought the final video down, making it less captivating for the audience to watch. This subtracted from the even stronger connection that we were hoping for from the audience, it was less captivating since Tilly wasn’t fully confident in front of the camera and in the A-roll footage her eyes were often wandering, and her tone was lacking enthusiasm.

Ideas for better improve future edits, process and overall final production would consist of incorporating enhanced visual storytelling, next time we could add more engaging B-roll footage to help narrate the chosen story to make it more exciting for audiences to watch. I would also investigate into having more dynamic sound production, for example different soundtracks for different moments. Alongside this, I would also delve deeper into researching for a more unique narrative that is likely to capture audience attentions more, specifically more diverse storylines such as expanding the focus beyond Tilly as an individual and more portrayal on the artform itself to include the struggles of the fashion industry connecting with topics of sustainability linking to ethics and more vital elements within the world of fashion problems.

As for future extensions of this project, I would like to interview more fashion designers who are typically younger and simplu just beginning their career to compare to Tilly’s story and to focus on how every individual has a different and unique path and outlook onto the subject matter of creative fashion.

A key lesson from my studio experience is the importance of all elements of media-making including the production stages such as Pre-production, production and post-production, each phase of the production process plays a significant role in shaping the final product for creating a cohesive edit. Understanding key aspects of camera, lighting, sound, set up, interviewing techniques is also a vital part that I learnt about for the overall studio experience. Having basic to strong levels of knowledge and understanding of these really helped to create a smooth flowing and final product that we were proud of.

A takeaway from the collaborative process was the importance of communication. Our group had strong communication skills that I believe enabled our group’s collaboration to go extremely smoothly. We had open conversations and also utilized social media group chats to continue to discuss what needed to be done for certain aspects of the process and to keep each other informed and in the loop. We all valued each group member’s opinions and ideas for this project, giving each individual an opportunity to have a strong participation in the final edit. Overall, we empowered one another to be creative and push our abilities within the media-making process.

Overall, I believe our group created a project we were all extremely proud of. Each of us has come out of this studio with new skills that we can incorporate into future media productions.

Zephyr – Week 12

Week 12:

During Week 12, our group recognized the need to revisit Tilly’s story to fill in some gaps in our narrative. We needed additional A-roll and B-roll footage, particularly moments where Tilly introduced her brand and shared the meaning behind the name “Remorse”. Zoe and Josie were extremely helpful within this process as they went back to Tillys house to re film the missing content!! Our group was very grateful they were able to help the group by organizing that filming day. After careful consideration and discussion, we collectively voted on which edit to move forward with. We ultimately decided on Josie’s version, as it not only showcased a compelling narrative arc but also featured beautifully creative footage that resonated with the essence of Tilly’s story. Overall, this was our final week to finalize the docu-series Zephyr project! During thursdays class time, we met in the editing suite where Seth gave us feedback on what to implement and what to take out in order to make the best video possible. Despite it being a very busy week for each group member, the process went smoothly.

Zephyr – Week 11

Week 11:

During week 11 of Zephyr, we had the opportunity to present our progress on our docuseries to a panel consisting of two individuals from RMIT that have strong knowledge and experience within this field. To prepare for this we had a mock presentation of our progress just to our class members and Seth and then on Thursday was the real panel. In our presentation my group and I discussed the pathway and ideas our edit was heading towards specifically, the narrative and video elements such as A-roll and B-roll footage that we were wanting to utilize. The feedback we received from the panel was extremely beneficial for our group as they discussed what worked and what didn’t, which allowed us to make changes before the finalization of our final edit.

Zephyr- Week 10

Week 10:

Week 10 of Zephyr was our filming week! We spent a full day at Tilly’s house, our chosen individual for the interview. The morning began with setting up the equipment, which included arranging the lighting, positioning the camera for specific angles, and ensuring the sound equipment was on the right settings. Once everything was in place, we dove into the A-roll interview section. Tilly shared her insights and experiences about her brand remorse. We asked her a variety of questions that not only covered her background but also delved into her thoughts on the broader themes of our project and her personal brand. After the A-roll, we transitioned to capturing B-roll footage, which included candid shots of Tilly in her environment, interacting with her surroundings, and moments that visually represented her story. We aimed to capture the essence of her personality and the atmosphere of her home, which added depth to our narrative. Overall, the filming day went really well.

Zephyr – Week 9

Week 9:

Week 9 was the beginning of the open studio period! My group and I dedicated this week to fine-tuning the details in preparation for our filming in Week 10. We carefully coordinated the logistics, booking the camera, lighting, and sound equipment we would need to capture our final project. Additionally, we focused on solidifying the narrative for our final project. Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, we discussed the key themes and messages we wanted to convey in Tillys story. This process not only clarified our direction but also strengthened our creative vision as a team. By the end of the week, we felt confident and prepared, eager to bring our ideas to life on film.

Zephyr week 5

Week 5 of Zephyr we focused on the application of lighting and how we can use it to provoke a specific mood and feeling. Specifically, we learned about the three-point lighting technique which is essentially three lighting sources focusing on one area or object that is typically centered within the middle of lighting structures.

During our Thursday lesson we got to have a go at setting up lighting alongside the camera/audio. We were given 2 older styled lights which came with a few slight challenges such as use of color blocks to change the lighting tones were a struggle to slide into the camera and the overall structure was occasionally hard to put together. Despite the challenges with the set-up, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of how different lighting such as warm or cool tones can significantly change the feeling of the production.

During the studio we also figured out who we will be interviewing for our assignment two. The test interview was on Tilly (Ynez) friend, she is a vintage clothing designer and 35mm film photographer. We all strongly agreed she would be the perfect individual to interview as her creative outlook seemed very interesting and aligned well the zephyr outline.

Zephyr week 4

Week 4:

Week 4 of Zephyr we began the first stages of our assignment 2. Specifically, we focused on the benefits of a VPW and how it can help the process and exploration of video production. During my time in this course, I haven’t made, used or even really heard of a VPW so getting to learn about it and how it is extremely beneficial within media practices has been very helpful.

In particular I learnt that a VPM has a few stages/ prompts including pre-production, production and postproduction. Typically, Preproduction involves the use of planning and researching, production is where we begin to film and create the content and finally postproduction includes the finalization of editing, audio and video.

Alongside this, during class time we watched other groups’ videos where we were able to gain some insight into what we could implement into our finalised product as well as what could work well and what could be improved on.

Zephyr – Week 3

Week 3, deconstructing! Week 3 of Zephyr has solely focused on learning how to use and testing out the kits from the Sony FX3 as well as progressing our assignment 1. A large proportion of class time has been spent watching camera tutorials informing the class how to properly use the camera in a safe manner, how to change audio levels on the attachments, how to attach and detach the camera from the tripod and learning how each of the different components of the camera work. When we first began this process, I was initially nervous as the camera looked very complex. However, after a few tutorials I have been able to gauge a deeper understanding in how to use it properly for the best video/ audio outcome.

Alongside this, my group and I have been working collaboratively in order to finish assignment 1 which is work 15% of our final mark. I believe we have all worked efficiently and our group enjoys sharing ideas on how to have the best outcome possible for this task. During the Thursday class time, we conducted a ‘mock interview’ of one of our members friends who is an artist. This was an interesting process as we used this practice to trial the audio levels and test our camera set up knowledge. All together this process worked out really well.

Overall, this week has been productive and enjoyable. Our group has put in alot of effort to ensure that our assignment is of standard and I’m looking forward to the final outcome.

Zephyr – Week 2

Week 2. This week in Zephyr I was unfortunately absent. However, with my groups Instagram group chat I was able to stay up to date with what was happening in the classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Despite being away, our group’s focus of the week was our pitch deck deconstruction, episode analysis and the docu-series analysis. I believe these came together really well as our group divided up certain sections of each document, which made the process a lot faster and more thorough.

Our collaboration within these tasks has worked extremely well as we have helped one another to navigate the elements of the assignment tasks. Alongside this, our group has created an enjoyable, caring and collaborative environment where each member feels comfortable sharing their opinions and ideas.

The series that we have chosen to Analyse for our assessment is the ‘I-D meets’ series that is broadcasted on YouTube. This docu-series was chosen as it explores ideas of identity, individuality and creativity. As a group we decided on this as we all connect to it in some way, especially being a gen-z audience.

Overall, as a group we delved deep into the making of docu-series elements and specifically the ‘I-D meets’ series whilst working on our documents.
