Speculative Sketch Ideas

So unfortunately I have been sick for the past week hence my absence throughout week 6, but thankfully I’ve gotten better and I’ve made some changes to the list of ideas we may pursue for project 3.

Earlier we made a list but it seems it was a bit too ‘specific’ so I’ve attempted to broaden it into this:

1. Audio – How can I manipulate game audio during editing? What kind of music works and what doesn’t? Is it even necessary?

2. Observation – In the case study of the game video I used during project 2, B2K6 Productions works with found footage in-game, observing events as they progress unpredictably. How can I edit found footage in a way that hasn’t been done before? Or at most, hasn’t been done much?

3.Planning – In most gaming videos nothing is ever planned. What if I were to plan different scenarios and create different stories within the confines of a video game? How can I plan and create a hybrid narrative form using such a restricting medium?

4.Reaction – Using our Vine video case study as an example, how much of a difference does the reaction of the subject within the video effect the impact? How can I utilize certain techniques to enhance the reaction of certain subjects?

-List subject to change once I get feedback.

To be more broad however, we’re mainly looking at 3 concepts to base our next few sketches on.

1. Observation – refers to what kinds of things we may record, whether it be the outside world or the gaming one, what things of interests are out there that require little to no post production editing and simply speaks for itself?

2. Time – refers to how we can display this notion of time within our videos – for this we’re looking at gaming in particular because not many gaming videos tend to work around this idea of ‘time’ which could also refer to progress.

3. Manipulation – How can we manipulate content given to us at random? Events that transpire that are unpredictable recorded and placed under ‘found footage’ – to what extent can we manipulate content in terms of creating a hybrid narrative, essentially, how can we make the content our own ‘original’ creation if the footage is taken from something else provided to us?

UPDATE

Apple and I have decided to explore the concept of manipulation within the context of a gaming video.

Working from a case study that examined an example of online video practice that we refer to as a ‘gaming highlight’, which is basically a short clip showcasing a moment during the session that sparks interest. Our group plan to explore how a gaming highlight can be altered when it is produced in different online services and tools such as YouTube, Vine and Twitter to name a few. furthermore we’re looking a bit into how we can expand on this notion of a ‘highlight’, where can this lead into?
How is the narrative or non-narrative structure of a gaming highlight altered when it is produced in varying online services and tools?
Our group through this inquiry are making a contribution to the development of a ‘highlight’ online video practice and gaming videos more broadly on the Web.

Case Study can be found in an earlier blog post here.
