In my previous blog, I mentioned how my group mates and I developed our small-scale work. We used live stream before but we found it troublesome and hard to manage as mistakes can happen and there’s no possible way to fix it. In the end, we decided to take another approach for assignment 2. The response (regarding the characteristics of online screen making) that we observed while performing our work is clear and evident. It’s the right thing the we agreed to use Tumblr as our platform because the two forms of quality are already there which is tag and share. With this social media, we tested the limit of the cross-platform and how effective it is especially to media creators. We learned so much about the online platform that we chose and also it helps us in doing our project work.
Our reaction video was posted first on a YouTube channel then it was shared through our Tumblr account. In that way, the people who came across our page then can go to YouTube channel to look at our other works. In Tumblr, we can post our content in Tumblr since it has a variety of format to use such as videos, pictures, and texts. In addition, Tumblr works like Facebook and Instagram but more on aesthetic-driven blog post style as a person can customise their page according to the person’s interest and for our project, this is exactly what we need. There’s a section in Tumblr where we can post a question in our profile where other people answer and vice versa. This type of social media platform is very interactive because it allows a person to do whatever they want through comments, liking, sharing/reblogging, and a person can even bookmark the posts that they want like how Pinterest works. Because of this, I can say that this is one of a good example to describe Automation, one of the five principles in new media because it makes everyone’s blogging easier and convenient because of the templates provided by the website.
Through executing our small-scale project, it made me realise how these platforms are connected but differs in a way. They (social media) might work the same way but they fave different templates and cater a specific audience. In class discussions, it made me think how broad new media is and this class gave me an opportunity to analyse the other materials that I haven’t got the chance to get familiar with. For a media student, it’s crucial to know these information as it will help us to gain further knowledge and to make our project work more successful.
So far, the project works that my group mates and I did is still on an average level as we are still cautious in making our project works. Choosing a content is easy, but the hard part is deciding which formal qualities will the content suit more? The question remains, how far can we, as a media students, go to experience the full extent of online making production? How far can we push the boundaries of new media?
