Augmenting Creativity: Week #1 Blog

I put this class down as one of my preferences because I found it sounded interesting using AI in media and as this is an emerging technology and something which will probably be used in the future every day, I believe it can be a vital skill in being the creators of tomorrow.

I have previously partaken in an AI studio, ‘Automatic for the People’, and I found it to be very interesting in discovering the capabilities of AI in conjunction with the creation of media. Embracing this emerging technology in the media landscape will be beneficial to all of us involved.

From this class I am hoping to learn more about different ways I can generate AI generated content. As I do have previous experience with coding but have not yet used programming to generate AI, I think it would be a useful skill. I expect to be working collaboratively with my peers as well as independently to participate in a variety of use cases. Learning how we can use AI technology ethically and effectively in our creation of media will be an important skill for us to learn as we move past university and into the world of media after our graduation.

The coding aspect of the class is something I have not done yet in terms of combining my past experience with programming and my current path of media. I never really thought about combining these two avenues or how they could interact with each other in the creative landscape. Coding has always been a very logical and straight forward topic in my head so to be able to find ways to incorporate this into my media making is very beneficial.

Today I saw a news article on The Guardian which has stated that the newest iPhone symbolises stagnation instead of innovation and AI awaits a similar fate. I found this article really just trying to downplay AI. It states how the technology is being commoditised and how the majority of the population does not have enduring interest in the topic. While these may be true statements, it does not mean that AI is anywhere close to stagnation. Artificial intelligence technology has been present since the 1950’s and has been developing ever since. For me personally, I have been interacting with AI my whole life as I have been an avid gamer since I could remember and virtually every game contains some sort of AI. Seeing the knowledge of AI become more mainstream in recent years shows that it still has a long journey before we can stay it is starting to stagnate especially when we haven’t realised even close to the full potential of the technology now.
