Automatic for the People Week 6 Reflection

Week 6 sketch:

Reflection:

This is my week 6 reflection for Automatic for the people. This week I discovered that video games can be created using AI. A youtuber (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyKKhxYJ4U4 ) who has no experience creating video games or coding was able to create a game with the assistance of AI for the first time in a relatively fast pace compared to someone who would have no help. As a huge gamer, I was really impressed because in my coding classes in the past, it took me multiple weeks to make simple programs. The fact that AI can help me create something functional in a few days just shows how impressive it can be in improving the efficiency of creating new media.

For my group’s media sketch this week, we created a short 1-minute video using completely AI generated videos using our prompts. We also used AI to create background music and a voice over. Overall, I think it turned out great. What worked well was that the tool we used was very accurately able to create videos based on what we prompted. I didn’t feel the need to re-prompt it multiple times however this might’ve been different if we went in a different direction for our sketch. What didn’t work so well was that pretty much everything that gets output is going to end up being creepy or unnerving in one way or another. Since these tools are still in their infancy, the output ends up weird and unrealistic, so you are kind of restricted in that sense that if you wanted to create something genuinely wholesome or serious, it is really hard when everything out put looks like a fever dream. Another thing is that sometimes the videos were more like still images. I think next time I could use more detail describing the actions I want taking place in the video rather than focusing on the scenery and character descriptions.

For our reading this week we took a look at an article about Hyperproduction. I was more interested in the aspects of it surrounding video game engines and creation of assets and even virtual characters. It was stated it would slash the time to build digital humans from weeks/months to less than an hour. The character created then be exported to other programs and used for animation or motion graphics. This would really speed up the production of many types of media.
