Week 11 Lectorial

I didn’t attend week 11’s electoral but looked at the slides online instead.
It was probably one of the most interesting, for me, because it was both factual and undeniably relevant to the way I personally interact with media today. When I was studying media in year 11 and 12 I noticed many of the studies about the media’s effect on audience, were using data from television and radio ratings. While this is still somewhat relevant, the slideshows in this lecture showed how many people are moving away from the regular TV broadcast, and finding their entertainment on streaming services online and others such as Netflix. Personally, I keep up with probably one TV show on television. All the other things I watch are on my accord, by using string services that new technology provides.

One of the slides in the lecture mentioned how some people view this as the ‘birth of a cultural democracy’ because they believe the commercial advertising that we would usually be forced to sit through is no longer dictated to us. The next slide mentions how Netflix offers free marketing for the films that would not be able to afford it originally, thus allowing consumers to watch a whole range of films and TV shows, not just the commercially dominated ones.

I think that Netflix, especially, was portrayed in a very positive light in this slideshow. It was refreshing to see something so modern wasn’t being condemned for turning people into couch potatoes or mindless slobs. Instead, it helped shed light on the ‘genius’ of streaming services and how new platforms are helping to revolutionise the way we interact with media.
