Response to- The Generational Divide in Cognitive Modes, N. Katherine Hayles
Deep attention is the ability to focus solely on one activity at a time, giving it your undivided attention and refusing to acknowledge other distractions. Reading this article in the lecture, I found myself able to concentrate wholeheartedly on the given task, using deep attention rather than hyper attention- where I would be distracted.
In an educational sense, deep attention would appear the preferable amount of attention, to maintain focus during lectures, seminars, screenings and even general tutorials. However, if given the undivided attention to a task aside from the one at hand, then it would not be beneficial.
I think, instead, a combination of both hyper and deep attention, as well as self discipline is necessary to focus on tasks at hand.
