HIROKI NAKAMURA: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION WITH CLASS. – response to difabz post

James discusses cultural appropriation within the context of Hiroki Nakamura’s new line of shoes.

In term’s of ticking the boxes, James has included an image, a link, an interesting title, a few tags and a succinct explanation about the focus of the post.

Though the post is foremost about an appreciation for the shoes and their creator, he has tastefully weaved in a reference to the idea behind the shoe design: cultural appropriation.

Combining the idea of a native american animal hide moccasin with a modern day sneaker to create a hybrid influenced by old and new.

It would seem James is quite fashion literate so I would suggest that some of his terminology be explained or expanded upon slightly.

For example, wanting to understand the term ‘FBT’, i had to do a fair amount of reading to find out it stood for ‘Fat Boy Three’. this was the name of a band who wore moccasins that helped to inspire Nakamura’s design for the ‘FBT’ shoe.

Even terming the shoe a “menswear future classic” implies a deeper knowledge of men’s fashion and its trends.

This post by James has a niche following which he has directed through categories like fashion and menswear.

Even then perhaps he might have linked to other fashions sites or one that explains trends or even other issues surrounding cultural appropriation in fashion and other examples of it done well.

Great start with possibilities for further discussion.
