Location switch/merge experiment

I did my first little bit of shooting on the weekend. Not having a huge amount of time, I just wanted to get a short experiment done, and hopefully get myself into the idea of more shooting. The basis of my experiment was to see how I could convey the seamless switching and merging of locations that often occurs within my dreams. For this experiment I used one specific dream as an example, which involves David Bowie telling me to get the drugs out of my car, before Johnny Depp from The Tourist poisons us, or something. I feel this is a pretty rich dream with a lot going on, and I plan to make it the main basis for the rest of my shooting and experimenting from here onwards.

In relation to conveying the merging/switching of locations, this dream took place both in my lounge room and outside somewhere with my car. There was a point in the dream that after Bowie was telling me to get the drugs out of the car inside my house, I was suddenly at my car, outside somewhere. I thought of several ways to capture this, but only shot the one way today. That one way was to shoot a conventional conversation with myself and my friend playing Bowie(who is barely being directed by the way – raw talent), and have me inside one shot, cut to Bowie, then outside when it cuts back to me. My main focus here was to make the shot of me outside match perfectly with the shot of me inside, in terms of my positioning/framing. I felt this was quite well achieved.

Overall, I think this basic experiment was a pretty good starting point, and I’m now pretty excited to keep it going.

(Lighting and sound etc. definitely wasn’t a priority for this, but nothing can excuse the fact that I’m out of focus in two of the shots. Oh well.)
