More Than Fabric: Brief 1

I chose these 5 images, based on a number of different factors. One of the reasons I really enjoy fashion is due to its ability to make a statement and accelerate social change in the world. Haute Couture and Prêt-à-porter designers, directly showcase to the world, what is trending or what WILL be trending in the future, they are also artists, and are intelligent, creative and open-minded. My 2nd, 3rd and 4th images all relate to the inclusive nature that fashion is beginning to adopt. Many designers, in this day and age, are using fashion as a platform to deconstruct the heteronormativity of sexuality and gender. Designers are doing this through the creation of androgynous, and gender-inclusive fashion brands. My 1st and 5th images, relate to my adoration for cinematography and idea that cinema is able to animate and enhance its subject’s soul. Although I really love neutral coloured clothing, I am a big lighting geek, and love experimenting with coloured lighting and pastel coloured backgrounds. I also love the fifth photo due to my background in film photography; I enjoy the texture you obtain from analogue systems, and the vibrancy of colours that film manages to produce and reproduce. I chose these 5 photos because they are multi-faceted; they may seem simple, but they are complex in regards to their content and stylistic choices.

At the end of this studio I want to walk away with a greater knowledge of the history of fashion, and the fashion industry. This studio seemed extremely interesting to me when it was being pitched, because it was unlike anything I had ever done before. It seemed extremely flexible and creative which, sadly, seems to be something that the other studios lacked. I chose this studio because it seemed like one of the few studios that wasn’t in some way, related to documentary. Although I love documentary, I feel as though most my body of work seems to be within this style and, ultimately, if I wanted to pursue documentary, I wouldn’t have begun a media degree. I chose this studio because I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, in regards to what I am used to filming. I have a sharp interest in fashion as I believe that it is an incredibly versatile and important medium in order to communicate ideas, and I also love the uniqueness of one’s own style and self expression. Fashion, in the past, has been a pivotal art form that threads together society and culture – and I believe that it will continue to do so. My goal is to walk away from this studio with a polished piece of work that I am proud of and contributes to my growing portfolio of work. I also want to look back on this studio with fond memories, as this is the last studio that I will be doing in my degree. I want to create something experimental that comments on contemporary issues, and delivers this commentary with a provoking essence of style and grace.
