Documentary Reflection

Reflection

Time goes fly, and soon this semester is over, and I think it was fun to remember the last semester when I decided to take a documentary as my studio. I used to think that documentaries simply looked like ‘Plant Earth’, recording some of the beauty of nature. But I found that I misunderstood the meaning of the documentary. The “Plant Earth” I’ve seen is just one type of documentary. There are other kinds of documentaries, such as autobiographies, historical documentaries, and so on. Of course, I’d like to thank Kim. In order to let us better understand the documentary, we watched a lot of documentaries.

Next, I’d like to thank Robin. He is a kind man. He taught us how to use more advanced equipment to record sound and to photograph the material we need. At the beginning of the documentary, this course, I do not really understand, never learned, but Kim encouraged us to communicate every week according to reading and see their own documentaries and classmates, from this week to learn what. This is very useful, everyone will have different ideas, through the exchange, we have a deeper understanding of the documentary. Keeping thinking is a constant theme from the last semester to this semester, and we need to think constantly. For me, the first thing to think about is how to make a documentary film What kind of documentary do you take? What do I need to pay attention to when taking documentaries? After eight weeks of practicing, I focused on the practice of shooting techniques. Because this is my weakness, I’m not good at shooting videos, so I learned from Fay and Lydia, and they gave me a lot of advice on video shooting, which was very useful.

About this documentary. First of all, I’m going to talk to Joey about what themes our documentary chooses. He put forward a very good idea, as an international student, our daily life has attracted more and more attention. In recent years, more and more Chinese young people choose to study abroad. Every student’s life should be different, and my idea is, I can make a comparison, compare the life of the students in the East and West countries. The idea of Joey is to interview two Chinese students, one boy and one girl, and make a comparison of their lives. However, we exchanged ideas with Kim, and Kim gave me a suggestion that if I had to take the life of an international student, I could take my own life. Through my life, I can witness the growth of my two years in Melbourne. In fact, when I was in high school, I left my parents and went to other places to study. It’s not difficult for me to adapt to a new environment. But coming to Melbourne, in addition to adapt to a new environment, I also need to take care of myself, for example, to learn to cook their own, more exercise their own living skills. I think I’ve had a lot of experience since I came to Melbourne for a long time, and it’s also a good experience. When I first arrived in Melbourne, my oral English was not very good, and communicating with others was a bit of a barrier. In the language school for forty weeks, I think I have a little growth, in the school, the teacher has encouraged me, I hope to be more confident, speak more, express their ideas. But in this documentary, I didn’t use this fragment, and I chose to shoot more details of my life. First of all, when I was at school in my country, there was a canteen in the school, and I didn’t need to cook for myself. However, in Melbourne, I need to learn cooking and learn to take care of myself. It’s a kind of growth. Abroad, many students are faced with, all from scratch, began to recognize some friends. Therefore, some people may miss their hometown and miss their friends in china. I also joined in this documentary, and spent the Mid Autumn Festival with friends. At ordinary times, you can invite friends to play together. This can alleviate the homesick mood.

When filming this documentary, Robin gave me advice in the form of a self timer. But I thought, I didn’t have a self timer, so I invited Joey to help me shoot. After the first presentation of my documentary in the class, Joey, because his theme wasn’t very good, I asked him to complete the documentary with me, and we set up a group. I’m grateful to him for being my team member. I often exchange ideas with him, and then shoot the footage we want. In the process of editing, he also gave me a lot of advice. The second time the class to show our documentary, Jeremy and Tristan also gave us some good advice, for example, at the beginning of the ring removed, because the alarm is too noisy, give the audience a negative emotion, but in the beginning, will affect the audience impression of our documentary. Kim also gave me a suggestion, at the end of the documentary to add a summary part, summed up their perception of growth. It should be a kind of emotional expression for me, conveying my feelings to the audience, so that they can understand that I am growing, and I have experienced the process of growing up. That’s the key point.

At the end of the semester, I finished a task that seemed impossible, shooting a documentary, even though it was only five minutes. But it’s also an interesting experience. And I’m happy to meet my classmates, and a very good teacher, Kim. I also learned a lot of new knowledge, and more exchanges with classmates. However, I still have a lot of shortcomings. At the beginning, I didn’t fully understand the true meaning of the documentary and caused some misunderstandings. In the first reading, the article mentions that documentary is just like poetry. To tell you the truth, I was confused at first. I don’t understand what the documentary has to do with poetry. When I finished a documentary, I also felt that the documentary was really like a poem, and the audience was able to see an emotion brought about by the documentary. First of all, the documentary shows a real situation. Whether it’s shooting documentaries about social issues or documentaries about natural beauty, it’s real. That’s critical. Secondly, the documentary can transmit to the audience an emotion. This is the essence of the documentary, to let the audience produce a feeling.

Next semester, I will work harder and continue to learn new knowledge. And finally, I’d like to thank everyone. Fighting!
