Experiment 4 – attending to ‘what’s left’

Reflection:

One key thing I learned from reading about noticing environmental damage is to pay attention to those small and easily overlooked places. As Tsing said, ‘Instead, agnostic about where we are going, we might look for what has been ignored because it never fits the time line of progress.’ (Tsing, 2015) I also paid special attention to this point in class discussion because I think it is very important for me to recognize environmental damage. In this experiment, I captured the broken bricks on the grass, the garbage thrown everywhere on the ground, the cracks in the ground caused by human beings, and the broken branches thrown on the ground. These are small places. If you don’t observe them deliberately, it is easy to be ignored by people. But it is precisely these places that allow us to intuitively feel the damage of human beings to the environment. These places that seem insignificant to most people are the most representative of the damage to the environment. In the video, these damaged environments are contrasted with the green grass next to them. On one side is a place that is obviously damaged by human beings, and on the other side is the green grass that represents nature. The grass is also full of garbage produced by humans. This contrast shows that humans have indeed caused certain damage to the environment and harmed nature. If I have to develop it further, I would capture more obvious, visible areas of environmental destruction to make my experiment more intuitive. Based on the feedback from my classmates, she suggested that adding more camera movement might be better , which is what I will improve next time.
