Flight starts off with ordinary sounds. Car tyres on the road, breathing, a door slamming. The sounds are diegetic, atmospheric and expected. Once the figure puts on a pair of shoes he finds on the ground, a new layer of sound is added. Non-diagetic wooshes, lazer sounds and star-wars-esque synths are added on top of the already existing soundscape provided by the sound of shoes hitting pavement, heavy breathing and a slight breeze. Each time the man’s feet hit the tarmac, an ironman like whizz is triggered, making the journey appear surrealistic and possibly even futuristic. When viewed without sound, the images are still interesting but certainly lack the added layer of intrigue that the sound effects bring. There is no score or backing sound, instead the natural sounds of a deserted street are combined with the futuristic sound effects, which makes the film take on a more simple but effective narrative tone.
