This week I am looking towards the music video for the 80s classic Take On Me by Norwegian synthpop band A-ha as my source of artistic inspiration. This music video often appears in the top end of “best of” music video countdowns, and it is easy to see why. With the fairly limited editing technology that was available at the time, director Stuart Gosling has still managed to create a dynamic music video that has stood the test of time. The video follows A1 who learns about a dangerous computer virus, enters the “computer world” by putting on virtual reality glasses and ultimately defeats the virus, told through a mix of live action footage and drawn stop motion animation. The narrative of this video is quite ambitious, and while I don’t think our one month timeframe will allow for such an extravagant plot and style, I do believe we can channel some of the creativity and smart editing used.
