Week 8’s lecture was all about narrative. We mainly discussed causality (boy meets girl to then fall in love) within narrative and character development(which allows the character to emerge from a blank slate into a fully formed character.) but also touched on the highs and lows within them. We were able to see these highs and lows by setting them out through a graph style to decompose and analyse the differences within narratives.
This weeks reading ‘Casablanca’ by Umberto Eco used the example of the film Casablanca to decompose the narrative within. This reading helped bring together the discussion within class about narrative flow.
The other reading for this week ‘The Substance of Story’ by Robert McKee focused on the foundations of narrative. It is clearly laid out with specific heading which made it easy to grasp certain concepts or issues such as ‘the audience bond’ or ‘the gap in progression’.
