FILM FORM REFLECTION – Materialising Writing Into Film

Translating a written piece into a visual/auditory medium is a rather remarkable process. Fortunately, through the week 10 activity, our class had the opportunity to practice this skill. We adapted a written piece that discussed technology into a short film. Partaking in this exercise not only underscored the versatility of storytelling but also illuminated a potential method of generating fresh and imaginative ideas.

The primary challenge our group faced was taking elements of the written piece and deciding whether they were adaptable. For example, it wasn’t possible to rent out a tech store to film in, nor was it practical to find a computer to dismantle. After a brief discussion, the group determined that changing many of the story elements was going to be inevitable. For the best outcome, we would need to focus on the core theme rather than the story’s surface details.

The central narrative-beat within the original text was ‘the act of an inexperienced individual learning from a seasoned tech guru’. Using this as the seed of inspiration, my group and I produced a final product that, although distinctly different, bore a thematic resemblance to its source. This underscores the flexibility of storytelling and its capacity to retain its essence even if significant changes are made.
It also highlights the significance of intertextuality, wherein one form of media can enrich the storytelling of another. Taking inspiration from writing seems to be a wellspring for innovation and creative reimagining. As a filmmaker, It reminds me that there is no singular path to creativity and that drawing from diverse sources can lead to surprising outcomes.

Another striking revelation is how different interpretations and perspectives could emerge from the same source material. Our group discussions illustrated how the final film could have been made in multiple different ways and possibly even spanned various different genres.

To summarise, the exercise of converting writing into film serves as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of filmmaking. In my case, having modified several elements of the original narrative, I discovered that the main theme -the mentor-mentee relationship- still retained its essence.
This demonstrates that there are endless possibilities that arise when we allow ourselves to be inspired by the vast tapestry of human expression.
