Week 12 Reflection

This week I finished up any last minute filming and began the long process of editing everything together. The soundscape is finally put together and I have sourced other sounds such as ambulances and planes in order to enhance the intensity of the broadcast montage. I have also chosen to have the broadcast voiced completely in the space scene because I found that the images I had filmed didn’t match the audio too well. From last week I was really happy with how the interviews went, although I did need to reshoot my grandfather’s one a couple of times. Looking at the quality on the big monitor instead of the small monitor on my camera I have noticed however that the ‘night time’ interview has quite a bit of noise. This is something I’m going to have to compromise because in the interview I have captured authentic emotion from my mum, something that just can’t be recreated.

As I’ve been editing this week I’ve decided to scrap the ‘voice over’ that would’ve been used to explain the events in the film. This decision was made because as my film became somewhat more non-fiction, omitting this voice over helped my film become more sincere. The 3D moon/space scene took up a lot of my time just like Paul said it would however it was very much needed in the opening sequence with the broadcast so I’m happy my hard work paid off. I am currently at the finishing stages of colour grading and this was a topic that was talked about heavily in our final class on Monday. As discussed with Robin and the class I have decided to colour grade intentionally with the purpose of making the ‘past’ or world landscapes a less saturated and grey tonal grade whereas the interviews are more saturated. This is to really y symbolise the contrast between the past and the now, to show that there is hope in the surrounding environments of my interviewees. The interviews are a much needed break from all the doom and gloom my film offers as it reflects upon trauma. Lastly, I must admit Monday’s class was a bit sad that the class has to come to an end, however, I will say that I really enjoyed this class especially during these times and just wanted to say thank you!
