Gondry goes grunge

Whilst it rained outside like a mofo, I got bored on Saturday and did a sort of a ‘maverick’ solo edit of our music video. It’s no Michel Gondry but it is pretty eclectic and colourful. Imagine a blend of classic image and audio Western logic, a European clog-load of weird colours and layers, and some gritty Seattle backwash. The timing of images match the audio beats and lyrics, while the story narrative is partly cohesive, partly ambiguous. Rather than me forcing ideas on viewers, nor completely ignoring any such pathways, the audience can make of it what they will.

I shared this video privately with the rest of my team, plus the actor and the artist and received two words from one person: ‘looks cool’. Everyone must either be recoiled in stunned silence, or just too polite to say ‘looks shit’.

Anyway, I had fun making it even if last weekend was the last time anyone ever saw it. If we extract any ideas or indeed any actual portions of this into our rough (or final) cut, then it’s been worth it. If this were an individual project, I would probably just correct some colour aspects including the first door opening scene, the exposure throughout the large final scene; apply an overall filter and then submit this as my rough cut. At least I’d know to expect feedback consisting of complete silence, with an occasional ‘looks cool’ &/or ‘looks shit’. I’m okay with that.
