Week 2 Blog Post

Blog post

In week 2 assignment, because many reasons, I have to change central idea about video instead of shooting protest. But the theme is still around Jay Ruby’s idea about two approaches by documentary, should include personal perspective and show expression to a specific event also interview someone who participated in this event as well. At this time, due to I cannot shoot vox pops at a scene. So I decided to go outside to shoot people, and focused on what people would do in Spring. Due to the situation in China has become better than before, and the restriction for citizen to go outside had become loosen. Meanwhile, in recently, the temperature has gotten rise up, Spring has coming! Many people are willing to go to park to have picnics. Thus I felt this might be a good theme to shoot.

I shot with my camera, and it was my first time to use camera to record clips. I have adjusted many times before I started shooting. For shoot to cover a scene, firstly need to find a stable place with tripod. In the first video, I shot some flowers, the kites flowing in sky, also people’s movements and activities in the park. Everything in my eyes is full of vigor and vitality. Only the first clip, yellow blossom I didn’t use tripod, cause I want to transport the mirror to layout, however my skills were not very proficiency, the clip looked a bit shake.

In my second video,  I don’t have any professional equipments for audio recording like a microphone. So before shooting, I really worried about sounds. In that case, I prepared a voice recorder when I did interviewed. For interview part, I interviewed my friend in this video, talk about hers ideas about Spring, and what did she felt  when she sat in the park’s chair and enjoy the sunlight and winds.

I have read the article about how to film a protest by Max Mallis (2017), even though I didn’t shoot the protest, but the methods in that article inspired me a lot, ‘think like an editor’ really helped me in deed, and save much time for me. I hope I can shoot a protest as well when I back to Australia and experienced different emotions from different people, and perceive different attitudes towards others’ perspectives.
