1.1 Development

If you asking what thing would I spend most of time to do? I probably would say, surfing the Net. I think nowadays, it is a social behavior that everyone (even some elderly people) look down on their phones or laptop either in public place or in private space. The time turns to a digital era; therefore, online screening media is the mainstream of the transmission. Throughout the first week of studio discussion and research, I learned the differences between online media and the traditional media can be distinguish by their various forms and contents. In class, we gathered a list of characteristics of online screen production. Media in online form produces digitally; some common use such as mobile and apps are blended into our daily life — we don’t watch television anymore, because we can see those TV show on Youtube anytime; we don’t read newspaper anymore, because we receive the news faster through internet; we choose to post advertisement online rather than on billboard, since it can reduce budget and spread wider…. Let me list some examples of the feature of online screen media.

  • Apps

There are various kinds of Apps nowadays. Different Apps offer different functions of online screen media. For example, Snapchat is for communicating ; Facebook is for blogging and making friends; Instagram is for posting picture ; Youtube is for watching video

  • Sharing

Information can be conveniently repost with viewers through online screen. For example in Facebook, users can share the contents that interested to them from original producer into their own timeline.

  • Cross-platform

When we are surfing in Facebook, there will be various web link outside Facebook, viewers can click those link then enter to another web. This is called cross-platform, which is meltable webs operate together and there would be a click that access to the other web. Below is the official Facebook account — Maroon 5.

He has post a music video that had originally post on Youtube; so when we click this video, the screen would automatically jump into Youtube.

  • Comment

When we post something online, other users can not only see our production, but also interact with each other. All of them can comment on the post, give reaction, which increase the interests of posting media. This also break the limitation of region or location — people who is 2,000,000 miles away from us can still interact with us as long as he/she has network access.

  • Current/effiectiency

Online screen media provide a platform that can achieve real-time production, which the traditional media cannot do. For example, we can video what we currently doing through live stream, or record in Instagram. Audience can also comment on it immediately, which is unattainable for traditional media — newspaper need time to collect, edit and publish. Although television can live, audience still cannot interact with producer directly.

From Douyu (a Chinese live stream platform), we can see the comments from audience. Anchor would receive the comments at the same time and make reaction like they are chatting face-to-face.

A big transition from some traditional media to online screen media is that, passive audience become active audience. They are part of the media; their reactions are affecting the trend instead of receiving media.
